Never Forget. Never Again!
Every year on September 21st, history delivers a vital reminder to free nations everywhere: the greatest threats to a republic often come not from foreign adversaries, but from within.
Decades ago, under the banner of national security and restoring order, executive power in the Philippines expanded unchecked, plunging the country into years of martial law. What was promised as a temporary measure to protect democracy quickly became the tool that dismantled it. Press freedom was extinguished, political opposition was silenced, civil liberties were swept away, and public trust was replaced by systemic corruption.
It took the courage of everyday citizensโdemanding accountability and rallying for their fundamental rightsโto restore constitutional governance and re-establish a critical truth: civilian authority must always remain supreme over the military.
For all of us who value a free society, this history carries a universal lesson. Freedom is never self-sustaining. Constitutional checks and balances exist precisely because power, left unrestrained, naturally seeks to expand.
We don't look back at these dark moments to dwell on the past, but to protect our future. Our liberties endure only when we remain vigilant, engaged, and unflinching in our defense of civil rights and democratic principles.
