Official Page of the BA Journalism's Flagship Organization from West Visayas State University, College of Communication ✨ Objectives:
1.

The Young Journalists' Society is the official organization of the Journalism students of the College of Communication of West Visayas State University. Membership of the organization is open to all bonafide Journalism students enrolled during the current school year and shall be effective upon declaration of the membership committee and upon payment of annual registration fee. Vision:
To develop future journalists who are conscious of their roles as among the most responsible citizens of the society. Mission:
To produce journalists who are responsive to the needs of the society and strong advocates of truth and justice. To promote journalism as an enriching endeavor through various information dissemination activities in society.
2. To provide venue for cooperative action in promoting the art and science of journalistic writing.
3. To promote closer ties and fellowship among the journalism majors of the College of Communication.
4. To help the members develop their journalistic talent and skills.
5. To help disseminate information about student-related activities.
6. To serve as venue for students' participation in nation building.

The newest young journos officially took their first steps as members of the Young Journalists’ Society through an afternoon of games, camaraderie, and meaningful moments during the recently concluded Freshmen Orientation.

Beyond the fun and challenges, the freshmen took their oath as official members of YJS, marking the beginning of their commitment to the organization and to the values of journalism.

From new faces to new members, the initiation became a celebration of belonging, connection, and the journey ahead.

The door is finally open, and a new chapter begins. 🚪✨

The Young Journalists’ Society warmly welcomed the newest batch of young journos from the College of Communication during the program proper of this year’s Freshmen Orientation.

With new faces, new stories, and new possibilities waiting beyond the door, our freshies officially took their first steps into a community built on stories, voices, and the pursuit of truth.

Welcome to YJS, young journos! May this be the beginning of a meaningful journey filled with stories worth telling, voices worth hearing, and possibilities waiting to be discovered.

As our guest speaker, Ms. Micah Jane Cantomayor shared how her journey in journalism led her to discover a deeper purpose—not only to tell stories, but to serve people through them.

She reminded our young journos that the path may not always make sense at first, but every experience can lead us closer to understanding why we are where we are. Through the power of communication, journalism becomes more than a profession—it becomes a way to understand communities, connect with people, and make a difference. 🖋️🌿

The Young Journalists’ Society welcomed its newest batch of young journos with warm words from its adviser, Prof. Ricky G. Abaleña III, DPA, who opened the Freshmen Orientation with a message rooted in purpose, growth, and service.

For more than 3 decades, Prof. Abaleña founded YJS after noticing that journalism needed a name, a space, and recognition within the College. What began as an effort to give journalism students a platform has since grown into a 33-year journey of honing young journalists and helping them discover what they can become.

Reflecting on his own journey—from being involved in communities and representing the country in international engagements, to becoming involved in media and eventually becoming a professor—Prof. Abaleña shared that his desire has always been to contribute to the development of young people.

For the newest young journos, his message was simple yet meaningful. “I take pride in what you become,” he shared, expressing his hope that every journalism student would grow into the best version of what they can be. He encouraged them to “let the YJS be your platform to extend your talents and abilities outside the classroom,” while reminding them to appreciate their teachers whoever they are to them.

For 33 years, YJS has opened a space for young voices to grow, discover their abilities, and find their place in journalism.

Today, another generation has stepped through that door. 🌿🚪✨

And as their journey begins, Prof. Abaleña leaves them with a challenge and a reminder: to become what you can be, use your talents beyond the classroom, and let your voice touch lives. 🖋️📖

The Young Journalists’ Society is honored to welcome back its very own, Ms. Micah Jane Cantomayor, as this year's YJS Freshmen Orientation guest speaker.

Cantomayor graduated as Magna Cum Laude and the Most Outstanding Journalism Graduate of the Class of 2024 from the West Visayas State University– College of Communication. She has also served as the Vice Chairperson of the Young Journalists’ Society A.Y. 2021–2022, Director for Performing Arts of the WVSU Artist Guild, and the Secretary of the WVSU Studiositas Honor Society. Her journey has since taken her beyond the newsroom and into public service.

Anchored on our theme, “Kahigayunan sa Bag-o nga Puerta: Maneuvering a Young Journo’s K**b to New Possibilities,” Ms. Cantomayor will take our freshie journos through a conversation on the possibilities that await beyond the doors we choose to open.
