"The conservation of the nature is the salvation of life"
The Philippines is considered the most cyclone-prone country in the world, lying on what is often described as the 'typhoon belt'. Alongside typhoons are big waves that could kill innocents and destroy the homes of the underprivileged.
To slow down the impact of these unwanted circumstances, the tree called mangrove has become the savior of many, especially coastal villages.A mangrove is a shrub or tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water. Alone, it is just a tree, but numbers of them could protect us from damaging winds, waves, and floods brought by typhoons.
Moreover, mangroves also serve as a buffer between marine and terrestrial communities, improve water quality by filtering pollutants and trapping sediments from the land, and reduce coastal erosion. In addition, mangroves provide habitat for a diverse array of terrestrial organisms, and many species of coastal and offshore fish and shellfish rely exclusively on mangroves as their breeding, spawning, and hatching grounds.
With that, a group of learners from West Visayas State University (WVSU) , Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Social Studies took an initiative activity entitled "Bakhawan- Ang Kahoy sang Paglaum: A Mangrove Tree Planting Activity. " In between the period of dusk and dawn in April 29, 2023 at San Enrique, San Lorenzo, Guimaras, this engagement takes place. Along with the help of Integrated Women's Alliance Guimaras (IWAG), and some locals, the project was successfully held.
By means of this, the group is hoping and manifesting that every single branch of mangrove implanted can save a lot in the next succeeding years for the life and future of marine and terrestrial communities as well as to coastal communal.
