Western Visayas Caving Association The Western Visayas Caving Association or the WVCA was founded in 1995 by Fred "Tatang" Jamili. It has two grottos, namely Iloilo and Bacolod.

EXPLORING THE UNDERGROUND: International Day of Caves & Karst 2026 🦇✨

To celebrate the International Day of Caves and Karst 2026, the Western Visayas Caving Association, Inc. (WVCA) conducted a cave assessment activity in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Local Government Unit last September 12-14, 2026.

Caves and karst environments are essential ecosystems that shelter unique wildlife, protect vital groundwater, and preserve our natural heritage. Through these comprehensive field assessments, WVCA continues to champion responsible caving, biodiversity monitoring, and evidence-based conservation.

Salute to all our dedicated cavers and local partners working to protect these fragile underground worlds! 🌍

Climate change research often focuses on forests and oceans. Ecosystems like caves get much less attention.

That’s a problem.

Caves and karst landscapes are an important groundwater resource for millions of people, host many unique species, and are archives of geological and archeological history. And what happens on the surface impacts what happens underground.

With this in mind, our friends at the Southeastern Cave Conservancy have developed what they describe as a first-of-its-kind Climate Action Plan for caves and karst, which is aimed at addressing some of this gap.

If you’re interested in caves, karst, groundwater, or the effects of climate change on subterranean ecosystems (and all that they contain), it’s worth taking a look and getting familiar with the issues and recommendations outlined in the plan.
