From March 11โ€“13, 2026, the Ecosystems Work for Essential Benefits, Inc. (EcoWEB) brought together six cluster agriculture cooperatives for a three-day Cooperative Business Planning Session under the GreenFiber Project. The activity was held at the Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.

The gathering marked a critical step in strengthening the capacity of farmer-cooperators as they prepare to engage in enterprise development anchored on sustainable abaca production and processing. More than a planning workshop, the session created a shared space for learning, reflection, and collective decision-making among partner cooperatives.

Serving as the resource speaker, EcoWEB Consultant Mr. Carino V. Antequisa facilitated two core modules: (1) the Renewable Energy-Powered Abaca Fiber Processing Facility (REPAFBF) and the broader abaca fiber industry, and (2) operational and financial planning. Through these sessions, participants deepened their understanding of how the REPAFBF operates, the roles of various enterprise actors, and the opportunities within the abaca value chain.

Guided by these inputs, the cooperatives began crafting their own operational and financial plans - practical roadmaps that will support their transition from production to enterprise engagement. These plans are expected to help ensure that community-based enterprises are not only viable, but also resilient and responsive to local needs.

The GreenFiber Project is a 3.5-year initiative led by EcoWEB, with support from AWO International, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and Germanyโ€™s Relief Coalition (ADH). It is implemented in partnership with the Municipal Local Government Unit of Sibagat, CADT 093 and SibLas Ancestral Domain communities, PhilFIDA Caraga, Caraga State University (CSU), Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT), NCIP Caraga, DTI Caraga, CDA Caraga, and other key stakeholders.

As ECOWEB continues to work alongside partner communities, initiatives like this business planning session help lay the groundwork for inclusive, community-led enterprises, where farmers are not only producers, but active decision-makers in shaping their economic future.

A historic milestone has been achieved by the Subanen community of Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur as their Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) was officially approved during the 21st Regular Session of the 10th Commission on April 21, 2026.

The struggle to secure the Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) began exactly 20 years ago. It was sometime in the summer of 2006 that the leaders of the Subanens of Bayog gathered in a meeting in the old BAUSO Tribal Hall in Buboan that the decision to apply for a CADT was made. The bold decision was made despite the absence of funding support and limited knowledge of the process. That decision proved to be historic and decisive.

The deliberation for the approval of the CADT, led by Chairperson Hon. Nancy Catamco together with Commissioners Hon. Alex A. Centena, Hon. Alberto R. Lagamon, and Hon. Marcelo โ€œDatu Amarilloโ€ A. Alejo Jr., recognized the strength, unity, and preparedness of the Bayog Ancestral Domain. The application was strongly supported by the NCIP, with the Regional Director highlighting that the process was fully funded by the Indigenous Peoples of Bayog themselves, demonstrating not only ownership, but also organizational maturity and financial capability. The Ancestral Domains Office (ADO) and Legal Affairs Office (LAO) further affirmed that all requirements were complied with and that there were no legal impediments to the application.

Representing the community, Bangat Gukom Lucenio Manda and Bangat Gukom Tony Edal stood for the Subanen people throughout the process. In a heartfelt message following the approval, Bangat Gukom Lucenio Manda expressed deep gratitude, emphasizing that this victory is not only for the present generation but for the future as wellโ€”an outcome of years of struggle, perseverance, and collective action.

EcoWEB proudly congratulates the Bayog Ancestral Domain, one of our long-standing partners since the early years of our work, and now a key partner in the ECOSEAD Project. This achievement reflects the enduring commitment of the Subanen community to protect their ancestral lands, assert their rights, and lead their own development pathways.

The approval of the Bayog CADT stands as a powerful example for other Indigenous communities across the country, a testament that when communities are organized, empowered, and united, meaningful change is possible.

EcoWEB joins the celebration of the Earth Day 2026 with the global theme: โ€œOur Power, Our Planet.โ€

Our organization, as an environmental steward, shares the general call that the future of the planet does not rest on policies alone but on the general action of the people. Clearly, real environmental change is driven by collective, everyday action, including the choices we make for the communities we build.

At EcoWEB, we support the empowerment of communities not to wait for change but to lead the transformational development that they envision.

In Sibagat, Agusan del Sur, supported abaca farmers continue to harness renewable energy through the GreenFiber Project. Solar-powered abaca processing is not just improving productivity; it is reducing emissions while strengthening rural livelihoods. Alongside this, communities are adopting climate-smart practices such as Abaca Macro-Propagation and FAITH (Food Always in the Home) Gardening. These are not just technical interventions, they are everyday acts of resilience, often led by women, that ensure food security and sustainability at the household level.

In Indigenous communities across Mindanao, the Enhancing Conservation, Ownership, & Social Enterprises (ECOSEAD) Project is building on this momentum by strengthening conservation, community ownership, and social enterprises within ancestral domains. Rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems, ECOSEAD supports communities in protecting their land while developing sustainable livelihoods, proving that environmental stewardship and economic empowerment can go hand in hand.

And when disasters strike, the power of people becomes even more visible.

Through EcoWEBโ€™s Survivor and Community-Led Response (sclr) approach, communities are supported not as passive recipients, but as decision-makers. In recent responses to Typhoon Tino in Cebu and Tropical Storm Basyang in Iligan City, affected communities identified their own priorities and led recovery efforts through microgrants. From restoring livelihoods to rebuilding essential community systems, these initiatives show that those closest to the problem are also closest to the solution.

Across all these efforts runs a common thread: climate action is most effective when it is local, inclusive, and people-driven.

Earth Day reminds us that protecting the planet is not a distant goal, it is something shaped by daily choices, shared responsibility, and collective action. Whether itโ€™s shifting to renewable energy, supporting sustainable livelihoods, or empowering communities to lead their own recovery, every action matters.

We already have what we need: the knowledge, the tools, and the communities willing to act. The question now is how we use that power, for our people, and for our planet.

As part of the 2026 CSO Month led by the Iligan City Peopleโ€™s Council (ICPC), EcoWEB staff participated as facilitators and documenters in the โ€œMaminaw Ta: A Psychosocial Support Sessionโ€ held on April 16, 2026, at Celadon Pensionne House, Iligan City.

The activity gathered participants from communities affected by Typhoon Basyang, providing a safe space to share experiences, challenges, and reflections. Through small group discussions, the session highlighted the value of listening as both a healing process and a way to better understand community needs.

Insights from the discussions were consolidated into recommendations on disaster response and policy, reinforcing the importance of citizen participation in building resilient communities.

By supporting spaces like โ€œMaminaw Ta!โ€, EcoWEB continues to uphold community-led processes, where listening becomes both a pathway to recovery and a foundation for more inclusive and people-centered governance.

In celebration of CSO Month and Earth Day, EcoWEB is proud to take part and invites everyone to be part of the Mangrove Restoration, MusiKalikasan, and Coastal Clean-Up 2026 led by the Iligan City Peopleโ€™s Council - a collective action that brings together environmental protection, cultural expression, and community solidarity.

Building on the success of previous years, this yearโ€™s activity aims to mobilize at least 1,500 individuals from communities, civil society, and local government to take part in meaningful climate action. Through mangrove planting, coastal clean-up, and MusiKalikasan, a celebration of peace and environmental awareness through music, we strengthen both our ecosystems and our connections as people.

๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒฟ Join us. Take action. Be part of the change.
Together, let us protect, restore, and sustain our coastal ecosystems.

In line with our continued commitment to environmental protection and community unity, we are pleased to invite you to take part in the

Mangrove ecosystems play a vital role in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation. However, many coastal areas continue to face degradation due to human activities and natural disturbances. This initiative seeks to address these challenges through collective action while fostering unity and environmental awareness among citizens.

In April 2024, following the declaration of Civil Society Organization (CSO) Month, the ICPC successfully launched this initiative as a flagship environmental and peace-building program. It brought together mangrove planting, a coastal clean-up drive, and a cultural concert promoting peace and environmental stewardship, drawing participation from thousands of individuals across various sectors.

The initiative was replicated in 2025, further strengthening its impact and reach. For 2026, the activity will once again be conducted to sustain momentum and deepen community involvement in climate action. This effort aligns with the development priorities of Iligan City, particularly in environmental protection, peace and order, tourism, and cultural promotion.
