โ€ŽTo conceal the dirty linen of the late dictator, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., his reign was labelled as the golden age of his loyalists. But the economic rate does not lie; the oppressed canโ€™t be shut by violence, and the graveyard of the victims of martial law did not sleep at peace with his greed for power. Today, September 21, 2026, is the anniversary of the Declaration of Martial Law in the country in the year 1972 under the Proclamation No. 1081. We recall and never forget how it painted red and made the nation cry for democracy. Ngunit sa kabila ng mala-impyernong pamamahala sa bansa noon, bakit may Marcos na naman na nahalal?

โ€ŽFrom the late dictatorโ€™s point of view, for him it was a golden year not because of economic growth but because he gained power and he put a collar on every Filipino citizen. The record shows 70,000 people are imprisoned; most of them do not even have a warrant of arrest; 34,000 people were tortured; and 3,200 people were killed. Ang kanyang pagiging ganid at sakim ang naging sandata ng mga Pilipino upang pababain siya sa kanyang puwesto at mabawi ang kalayaan na kanyang ipinagkait sa milyon-milyong Pilipino na nagdurusa sa kanyang pamamahala.

โ€ŽMasakit mang isipin, hindi pa rin nadala ang mga Pilipino. Another Marcos was elected as the president in the country, and his family is running a wild circus and political dynasty in the senate and house of representatives. Walang pinagkaiba sa ama, parehong sakit ng lipunan. Years may pass, but we shall never forget how dirty and rusty their leadership is. For the love of the nation, may people choose to open their eyes and stop acting blind to the unjust system of the country. Walang magbabago kung maging tayong mga Pilipino ay hinahadlangan ito. Busalan man nila ang ating bibig, hindi tayo dapat pasisindak. Kahit limang concealer pa 'yan, 'di talaga matatakpan ang baho ng mga Marcos. At kahit anong kusot pa 'yan para pabanguhin ang kanilang pangalan, may amoy talaga ang kanilang pamamahala.

On September 21, 1972, one proclamation changed the course of the country. 54 years later, we look back at what came after.

This exhibit honors the Filipinos who refused to be silenced, from students, writers, and community leaders to those who paid the price for speaking out, including one of our own from Iligan. Alongside their stories are local oral narratives from Tangub City and Mahayag, where ordinary people recall what life was really like under Martial Law: the fear, the hardship, and the differing memories that still remain. It also lays out the history behind it all, from Proclamation No. 1081 and the reasons given for it to the decrees that followed.

Some of the accounts are heavy, but they are part of the truth, and they deserve to be heard.

Rey Luis Adeva Montesclaros is an Assistant Professor IV at the Department of History of Mindanao State Universityโ€“Iligan Institute of Technology. He graduated from MSU-IIT DHS High School in 1984 and earned his A.B. in History from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), MSU-IIT, in 1990. He was among the first batch of graduates of the Master in History Program of MSU-IIT CASS in 2006 and is currently pursuing a PhD in History at UP Diliman. He joined the Department of History as a lecturer in 1990 and has taught Elementary Spanish and served as an ROTC instructor, in addition to teaching History subjects.

Prof. German Gervacio, PhD, is a Full Professor of the Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan, Kolehiyo ng mga Sining at Agham Panlipunan, MSU-IIT. He is a resident panelist of the Iligan National Writers Workshop and a founding member of the Mindanao Creative Writers Group, Inc. He has represented Northern and Central Mindanao in the National Committee on Literary Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

He is a five-time recipient of the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature and a four-time winner of the HomeLife Magazine National Poetry Competition. He has also received the TOMA Awards, MSU-IIT Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Alagad ng Sining at Kultura, and TEODORA Awards. He currently serves as the University Grand Marshal and Mace Bearer and is the author of several books, including Hari Manawari, Si Tanya, ang Uwak na Gustong Pumuti, 101 Bugtong na Hindi Alam ng Titser Mo, Sinsil Boys: 13 Maikling Kuwento, and Kalam ng Kalamnan.

Their voices and insights will help us revisit stories and perspectives from the past.
