What is time, exactly, and how can we keep track of it? As strange as it may seem, physicists are still looking for precise answers to these questions.

An international collaboration including ICTP postdoctoral fellow Ludmila Viotti and ICTP senior research scientist Rosario Fazio might have just found a route to answering this question by proposing a protocol to build a high-precision clock that exploits the properties of quantum mechanics. In an article published in Physical Review Letters, they suggest that the properties of time crystals, a new quantum phase of matter recently predicted and experimentally explored, could be used for timekeeping.

Could the universe’s earliest gravitational waves have helped create dark matter?

A new theoretical study published in Physical Review Letters explores how waves that formed shortly after the Big Bang may have introduced new physical scales, breaking the symmetry of the early universe. This process could have led to the creation of Weyl fermions — particles that may have later acquired mass and contributed to the dark matter we observe today.

Using a superconducting trap and superconducting quantum interference device, researchers levitated a microscopic ferromagnet and measured its wobble, extracting key signatures of spin-rotation coupling — a long-theorized effect uniting quantum spin and classical rotation.
