Kenneth Bacala Shares U.S. Fellowship Experience at HBONI Pagtililipon 2026

Participants of the Pagtililipon 2026 of the Hope Builders Organization Negros Island Inc. (HBONI) gained valuable global insights as Kenneth Bacala, a newly selected participant of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Professional Fellows Program, shared his experience during his fellowship in the United States. The event was held in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, on April 18, 2026.

Bacala, one of the 26 Filipinos chosen for the prestigious exchange program, spoke before youth volunteers gathered at the annual assembly. His presentation highlighted key learnings from his time in Missoula, Montana, particularly emphasizing the vital role of non-government organizations (NGOs) in fostering community development and nation-building.

Drawing from firsthand experience, Bacala described how NGOs in Missoula serve as strong pillars of support within communities. He noted that these organizations are deeply embedded in addressing social issues, ranging from education and public health to environmental sustainability. According to him, their impact is driven not only by structured programs but also by a culture of volunteerism and shared responsibility.

“One thing that stood out is how people truly value education, not just as a personal achievement, but as a collective investment,” Bacala shared. He explained that communities actively support learning initiatives, ensuring that opportunities are accessible and inclusive.

Bacala also underscored the importance of collaboration among organizations, institutions, and individuals. He observed that partnerships in Missoula are built on trust and a shared vision for progress, enabling more efficient and sustainable solutions to community challenges.

“The spirit of collaboration is very strong. People work together, not in silos, and that makes a huge difference,” he added.

His insights resonated with the participants, many of whom are actively engaged in grassroots initiatives across Negros Island. Hope Builders expressed appreciation for Bacala’s presentation, noting that such global perspectives are essential in strengthening local development efforts.

The Pagtililipon 2026 serves as a platform for reflection, knowledge-sharing, and alignment of goals among HBONI stakeholders. Bacala’s participation not only highlighted the opportunities available through international exchange programs like YSEALI but also reinforced the importance of applying global best no practices within local contexts.

As HBONI continues its mission to empower communities, Bacala’s experience stands as an inspiration for young leaders to engage, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

"𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘋𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦"

Dear Diary,

Hope, in my story, is something I discovered within myself after going through different challenges. It is more than just a word; it is a feeling and a mindset that pushes me to keep going and move forward. When I joined HBONI, I was filled with doubt and fear, thinking I wasn't capable. But by holding on to hope, I found the strength to overcome those thoughts. In the end, I not only proved to myself that I could do it, but I was also able to help others along the way.

There were many moments in my journey that changed me—too many to count. Each experience, whether small or big, helped shape me into a better person. These moments taught me that no matter what happens, there is always a brighter beginning ahead.

If I could speak to my past self, I would tell them that hope is not just a word I always say; it is something I hold on to, especially in times of doubt and fear. Hope helps me keep moving forward, even when I feel uncertain or scared. Hope has become my strength, reminding me to keep going.

I chose the title "From Doubt to Purpose" because it reflects my story. At the beginning of my journey, I was full of doubt, fear, and uncertainty. But as time passed, those doubts turned into a sense of purpose. I didn't just grow for myself; I became someone who could inspire and help the community. The title captures how hope became the foundation of my journey, guiding me from a place of uncertainty to a life with meaning.

"𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭"

Dear Diary,

Hope is the people who stay by my side in the hardest times. Hope is the people who accept who you are now and understand what your past is. They are the hope that keeps me going—staying with me in my silent times, walking with me in my darkest paths, and lending an umbrella on rainy days. In my journey, many have left, some stayed, and there are also new people who became part of my hope.

In the quiet chapters of my journey with HBONI, there were moments that slowly changed me, and they shaped the person I am becoming today.

HBONI is the second biggest plot twist in my life. The first was having an extraordinary journey of having a baby girl at an early age. My life fell apart—dreams that needed to be set aside, self-limitations, and the mindset that I should not do this or that because I have a child. I thought I didn't deserve to do certain things because I am a mom. Those thoughts limited me. But HBONI came into my life and made me realize that through it all, I still deserve to learn and explore more about myself. There is still more beyond my limitations and boundaries. I gained my confidence back, I take on challenges, I face my fears, and I can truly say I am growing. HBONI helped me cross those limitations to become a better person.

If my past self could hear me now, I would say: "Keep burning the hope in your heart. Always remember that you don't easily give up on the things you want, even when hardships come your way. Always hold on to our motto: to always try and try again. Because there will be times when life will try to put out the burning hope you have, so strengthen it, keep it burning, and don't rush things. Enjoy your lovely, chaotic life there as a kid, because life is harder here—and there are also so many schoolworks."
