Why Is St. Anthony de Padua Always Holding Baby Jesus? The Story Behind the Image ‡οΈ
There's a beautiful reason behind the image...
According to a long-standing Catholic tradition recorded in later accounts of his life, St. Anthony was staying in a simple room while spending time in prayer.
One night, the man hosting him noticed an unusual light coming from Anthony's room. Curious, he looked inside and witnessed something he would never forget: St. Anthony holding the Child Jesus in his arms with deep love and reverence.
Imagine seeing that.
This account comes from the tradition surrounding St. Anthony's life, and while Catholics are not required to believe private revelations, many have found this story spiritually powerful because it highlights the extraordinary closeness St. Anthony had with Christ.
And honestly... that's the part that challenges me.
Because it's possible to know all the right answers about the faith while still keeping Jesus at a distance.
St. Anthony (1195β1231) was a Franciscan priest, a powerful preacher, and a Doctor of the Church. Many people know him as the patron saint of lost things. But before he helped others find what was missing, he had first given his own life completely to Christ.
Maybe that's why this story still resonates today.
We live in a world full of distractions, noise, and endless scrolling. Yet the saints remind us that friendship with Jesus isn't reserved for a select few. It's an invitation for all of us.
Not just to admire Him.
But to truly know Him.
π Prayer to St. Anthony:
O glorious St. Anthony,
who held the Infant Jesus in your arms,
obtain for us the grace
to love the Child Jesus with all our hearts
and to find whatever we have lost
especially the things of God.
Amen. π
