What if you gave everything and no one ever shows their appreciation.🥲

Well, this is the truth behind Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis📘🪳. Here we follow a man named Gregor Samsa, a person who works and provides for the house without any help. He sacrificed everything, his dreams💭, his aspirations🌟, and no one questions it. His family never says thanks and never shows their appreciation. To them, he isn’t a person; he is a tool🛠️; a utility.

One morning, Gregor wakes up not as a human, but as a large insect🪳😨. The first thing that comes to his mind isn’t, “What has happened to me?” It is. “What will my boss say if I am late?” ⏰He thinks like this because all his life, he has always been entangled by his job💼 and responsibilities📌. And here is the most terrifying part: at the end of the story, they move on, as if he was never really important.

At the surface, this story may be about a man who suddenly turns into a hideous pest🪳, but the deep meaning of the story is far more disturbing. It is about what happens when a person is only valued for what they do⚖️, and how quickly they are forgotten once they no longer serve a purpose. The Metamorphosis is a novella that explores many topics like alienation😔 and isolation🧍‍♂️, dehumanization🤖, dependency⛓️‍💥, existentialism❓ and the absurd🎭.

We all might already know the famous quote "𝘿𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙖 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙗𝙮 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧" for its memorable lesson. Books do not show their worth through visual imagery but through their words and the story they come up with. It's no different from the idea that people hide deeper stories in their actions, thoughts, and speech — even if it may seem confusing, questionable, or messy to us. Besides, we can't fully understand the book we read at first glance. It actually takes a number of pages — possibly hundreds — to have an in-depth understanding of it. So, just like how a book should first be read rather than judged, a person must first be understood rather than labeled.
