Definition: The liberating process of consciousness-mobilization that enables critical thinking about how we live and how the world we live in is ordered. It is important in Philippine Literature as it uncovers the effects of oppression and exclusion, and increases awareness of unjust circumstances, events, and relations that have been ignored and normalized or considered part of daily life.

El Filibusterismo shows how oppression and injustice can shape a man and his actions. Through Simoun, the novel explores how years of suffering can make a person vengeful and full of anger. Josรฉ Rizal's El Filibusterismo emphasizes that while justice and righteousness is needed to make a better nation, how it is achieved can determine whether it leads to change or suffering.

Ineffable is an adjective that comes from the Latin word ineffabilis, which means "unutterable" or "not to be spoken". This word describes something that can't be expressed in words. It implies that an experience, thought, or feeling is beyond language and may even be beyond the understanding of any human.

Example: After reading the book, she felt a sense of ineffable sadness that she couldn't quite explain.

Beyond what we read

Every story that we read
Starts out as just a delicate seed.
Little by little, it grows inside our minds and hearts,
And teaches us a work of art.

It's not only words that we see.
Or pictures drawn so carelessly.
Beneath the ink, beneath the view,
A hidden truth begins to bloom.

A heroโ€™s rise, a villainโ€™s fall,
May not reveal the truth at all.
For every fight and every war
Reflects a piece of the writer's soul..

For each word and each line
has more to say that needs to be heard.
Thus, read not with your eyes,
But with a heart that sees the lightโ€”
And there youโ€™ll find, beneath the disguise,
A deeper truth that softly lies.

What if you gave everything and no one ever shows their appreciation.๐Ÿฅฒ

Well, this is the truth behind Franz Kafkaโ€™s The Metamorphosis๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿชณ. Here we follow a man named Gregor Samsa, a person who works and provides for the house without any help. He sacrificed everything, his dreams๐Ÿ’ญ, his aspirations๐ŸŒŸ, and no one questions it. His family never says thanks and never shows their appreciation. To them, he isnโ€™t a person; he is a tool๐Ÿ› ๏ธ; a utility.

One morning, Gregor wakes up not as a human, but as a large insect๐Ÿชณ๐Ÿ˜จ. The first thing that comes to his mind isnโ€™t, โ€œWhat has happened to me?โ€ It is. โ€œWhat will my boss say if I am late?โ€ โฐHe thinks like this because all his life, he has always been entangled by his job๐Ÿ’ผ and responsibilities๐Ÿ“Œ. And here is the most terrifying part: at the end of the story, they move on, as if he was never really important.

At the surface, this story may be about a man who suddenly turns into a hideous pest๐Ÿชณ, but the deep meaning of the story is far more disturbing. It is about what happens when a person is only valued for what they doโš–๏ธ, and how quickly they are forgotten once they no longer serve a purpose. The Metamorphosis is a novella that explores many topics like alienation๐Ÿ˜” and isolation๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ, dehumanization๐Ÿค–, dependencyโ›“๏ธโ€๐Ÿ’ฅ, existentialismโ“ and the absurd๐ŸŽญ.

We all might already know the famous quote "๐˜ฟ๐™ค๐™ฃ'๐™ฉ ๐™Ÿ๐™ช๐™™๐™œ๐™š ๐™– ๐™—๐™ค๐™ค๐™  ๐™—๐™ฎ ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™จ ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง" for its memorable lesson. Books do not show their worth through visual imagery but through their words and the story they come up with. It's no different from the idea that people hide deeper stories in their actions, thoughts, and speech โ€” even if it may seem confusing, questionable, or messy to us. Besides, we can't fully understand the book we read at first glance. It actually takes a number of pages โ€” possibly hundreds โ€” to have an in-depth understanding of it. So, just like how a book should first be read rather than judged, a person must first be understood rather than labeled.

Reading Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe feels like stepping into a world where language isnโ€™t just expressionโ€”itโ€™s power. A single agreement, spoken and sealed, becomes something irreversible. Itโ€™s terrifying to think that something as simple as words can carry the weight of a soul, turning curiosity into consequence, and desire into something far more dangerous.

What makes it even more haunting is how real it feels. We speak every day, we promise things, we agree without thinkingโ€”but Faust reminds me that words arenโ€™t empty. They shape who we are, what we become, and sometimesโ€ฆ what we lose. Itโ€™s not just about a man and a devilโ€”itโ€™s about how easily we can give pieces of ourselves away without realizing it.

This story doesnโ€™t just tell you about powerโ€”it makes you feel the weight of it. And after reading it, it makes you pauseโ€ฆ and think about every word you choose to say.
