Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.” Matthew 23:27–28

For the third day in a row, we read from Jesus’ fierce denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees. His words are exactly what these religious leaders needed to hear—strong medicine meant to awaken them from their self-righteousness, so that they might repent and receive the superabundant grace that would soon pour forth from His Cross. Though His rebukes may sound shocking—especially to those who heard them for the first time—we must receive them not with shock, but with humility and openness, applying them to our own spiritual journey.

Immediately after this lengthy denunciation, Jesus turns inward and offers a heart-wrenching lament over Jerusalem, especially over the hardened hearts of the very leaders He had just addressed. Though not included in today’s Gospel, the very next verse reveals His sorrow: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling!” (Matthew 23:37). This tender image opens a window into Jesus’ Sacred Heart—the same heart that had just delivered such relentless rebukes.

Consider that image: a hen gathering her young under her wings. By natural instinct, a mother hen shields her chicks, even risking her life to protect them. In placing that instinct within creation, God reveals something of His own divine love. He, too, longs to gather, shield, and save us from eternal harm. Nothing—not even the hardness of our hearts—can stop Him from extending His merciful embrace. Yet just as a chick that strays from its mother forfeits her protection, so do we when we resist Christ’s call. His lament is not rooted in anger, but in grief over those who are unwilling to be gathered and saved. Even His fiercest rebukes flow from a heart burning with love.

Though these words were originally addressed to the scribes and Pharisees, they apply to each of us. God will stop at nothing to bring us safely into His care. If gentle compassion moves our hearts, that is what He offers. If firm rebuke is what we need, He offers that too. Whether He draws us with tenderness or corrects us with firmness, His purpose is always the same: to keep us safe from sin and eternal separation, and to draw us into the Kingdom of grace.

Interestingly, this rebuke was Jesus’ final public sermon in Matthew’s Gospel. If we were writing the script for His final week, we might envision a message of consolation or encouragement to close His public ministry. But instead, He ends with a sobering warning. Why? Because it was a final act of mercy. His last words to the crowds were meant to awaken hearts before it was too late. It was love speaking its final appeal, a shepherd crying out for His wandering sheep.

Reflect today on Jesus delivering this final sermon to you. Heed His warning and receive it in the way it was delivered: with love. Feel His urgency and His desire to do whatever it takes to draw you closer to Himself. Respond to this sermon, and do not remain among the unwilling. Let these final words of Jesus pierce your heart, so that you may be gathered under the shelter of His wings and never stray again.

Most merciful Lord, You will go to any length to draw us back to Yourself when we stray. You long to gather us under the wings of Your loving protection, keeping us safe from all sin that leads to death. Open my heart, dear Lord, and grant me the grace I need to respond to Your cry for my soul. May I never stray but always remain firmly under the shelter of Your wings of grace. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen

The Storms of Life
August 3, 2026

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. Matthew 14:22–25

Only God, in His perfect Wisdom, could convey profound spiritual meaning through Jesus’ human actions. Though His miracles reveal His divinity and His teachings articulate divine mysteries, so does every subtle movement He makes—each one working together to prophetically depict the full Gospel. The Church, from her earliest centuries, has come to recognize and contemplate these deeper layers through what is known as the allegorical and spiritual sense of Scripture.

On the surface, today’s Gospel reveals Jesus’ divinity simply through His walking on the water. Yet beneath the surface, other mysteries are unveiled. The mountain, the solitude, the prayer, the storm, the boat, the fear, and Jesus’ words all communicate something of Christ’s saving mission and of our journey through life with Him.

Jesus goes up the mountain alone to pray. In Scripture, mountains are places of divine encounter—Moses and Elijah encountered God on Mount Sinai, and Jesus was transfigured before the disciples on Mount Tabor. In today’s Gospel, the mountain signifies Jesus’ communion and heavenly intercession with the Father. He ascends alone, leaving the disciples behind, just as He would ascend to the Father after the Resurrection—remaining with us spiritually while we, the Church, continue our pilgrimage through the storms of this world.

While Jesus is in prayer, the disciples struggle in the boat, tossed by waves, with the wind against them. The boat represents the Church amid the turmoil of the world. The waves symbolize trials, temptations, and fears that rise without warning. And though Jesus seems physically distant, He is never inattentive. In fact, it is precisely in the hour of greatest distress that He draws near.

Jesus comes to them in the fourth watch of the night—the final and darkest stretch before dawn. This is the hour of the soul’s deepest desolation, when one feels most abandoned, most vulnerable, most helpless. Yet it is also the very moment when divine help arrives. Jesus walks toward them on the sea, using the very waves that threatened to destroy them as the path of His approach. The storm does not hinder Him; He walks above it, showing His authority over chaos and His power to transform even the fiercest trials into a means of His presence.

But the disciples do not recognize Him. They cry out in fear, thinking He is a ghost. This reveals a spiritual truth: In our moments of fear and confusion, we can misperceive even the presence of Christ. When our hearts are unsettled and our faith is shaken, we may not see clearly the One who comes to save us.

Then Jesus speaks words that echo through every age: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” In Greek, the phrase “it is I”—egō eimi—is the divine Name revealed to Moses: “I AM.” This is not only reassurance, it is a revelation of Jesus’ divine identity. With this declaration, Jesus does more than calm the sea—He calms the soul, inviting the disciples to place their trust not only in what He does, but in who He is.

Reflect today on any storm in your life in which you feel God is absent and the waves are overwhelming. Imagine Jesus walking toward you on those very waves. Though His presence may not be immediately clear, look with eyes of faith and listen for His voice: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Welcome Him in, and trust that His grace is sufficient for every trial and tribulation God permits you to endure.

Most miraculous Lord, You speak to me day and night—through the Scriptures, inspirations, signs, and sacred symbols. Yet too often I fail to perceive Your presence, especially amid the storms of life. Open my eyes to recognize You, even when You come in unexpected ways. Help me to welcome You into the boat of my soul with faith and joy, so that You may bring order to the chaos I endure and fill me with Your abiding peace. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.

Becoming Lukewarm
July 15, 2025

Memorial of Saint Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.” Matthew 11:21–22

Chorazin and Bethsaida were Jewish towns that Jesus visited frequently to preach and to perform many “mighty deeds.” They were located just north of His city of residence, Capernaum. Tyre and Sidon were pagan coastal cities northeast of Chorazin and Bethsaida, in modern-day Lebanon, and were towns known for their immoral living. Though Jesus did not spend much time in those cities, He did visit them at times. During Jesus’ first recorded visit there, recall His encounter with the Syrophoenician woman who begged Him to heal her daughter (Matthew 15:21–28). The Gospel passage quoted above took place prior to Jesus making that journey.

Why was Jesus so harsh toward the towns He spent so much of His time in. Why did He rebuke Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum? To answer this, it’s important to remember that Jesus spent most of His time preaching to the “lost sheep of the house of Israel.” In other words, His primary mission during His public ministry was to share the Gospel with those who were descendants of Abraham and had been entrusted with the Law of Moses, the teachings of the prophets and the liturgical rites. For that reason, Jesus not only preached with perfection to these people, He also did miracle after miracle. And though there were many who did believe in Him and became His disciples, there were many others who were indifferent or who flatly refused to believe in Him.

Today, Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum could be seen as symbols of those Catholics who were born and raised in the faith and were given good formation by their parents and others. Many parents whose children have gone astray from the faith wonder what they did wrong. But the truth is that even Jesus Himself was rejected, despite His perfect preaching, perfect charity and undeniable miracles. And the same happens today. There are many who, despite being raised within the holy faith given to us by Christ Himself, reject that faith and turn a blind eye to the Gospel and the Church.

Jesus’ rebuke of those towns should echo today in the minds of those who, despite being given so much in regard to a good upbringing, have rejected God. Of course, that rejection is not always absolute and total. More often, it is a rejection in degrees. First, the rejection comes in the form of missing Mass. Then moral compromises. Then a lack of faith. And eventually confusion, doubt and a complete loss of faith sets in.

If you are one who has started down the road of becoming more and more lukewarm in your faith, then the rebuke of these towns by Jesus should be understood to also be directed at you in love. “Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required…” (Luke 12:48). Therefore, to those who have been taught the faith well, much is expected. And when we fail to live up to that which is demanded of us by God out of love, a holy rebuke is exactly what we need.

Reflect, today, upon whether the rebuke Jesus issues toward these towns is also issued toward you. Have you been blessed with a good formation in the faith? If so, have you done all you can to help nourish that faith and grow in your love of God? Or have you allowed your faith to dim, to become lukewarm and to begin to wither and die? If you have been given much, have been raised in the faith and have been privileged with good examples in your life, then know God expects much of you. Answer that high calling that is given to you and respond to God with all your heart.

My passionate Jesus, You poured out Your heart and soul through Your preaching to the people of Israel. Although many accepted You, many others rejected You. I thank You for the privilege I have been given to hear Your holy Word preached to me. Help me to respond to You with all my heart so that I will be counted among those who listen and believe. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.

Faith Born of Encounter

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But Thomas said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” John 20:24–25

Thomas’ journey invites us to reflect on our own. Like Thomas, we are sometimes absent from encounters with the risen Lord. Failure to pray daily, to attend Mass faithfully, to confess our sins, to nourish our souls through spiritual reading, adoration, retreats, or parish missions can isolate us from Christ and diminish our faith. Absence from these means of grace can open the door to spiritual doubt and weakness.

If these struggles are familiar to you, take heart in the example of Saint Thomas. If your faith has faltered—especially if you experience serious doubts—or if worldly concerns have drawn you away from the life of grace, then let Thomas’ prayer become your own: “My Lord and my God!” He professed faith in what he saw, so that we might profess faith in Christ whom we do not yet see. That simple little prayer, prayed with the certainty of faith and with sincere passion in the heart, sparks greater faith and brings us the clarity we need.

Reflect today on Thomas being absent from Jesus’ first Resurrection appearance on Easter Sunday. Try to feel his disappointment and doubt. Thomas carried those feelings for an entire week until Jesus appeared again. See yourself in him by identifying any times you have felt the same. Then move forward to the moment, one week later, when Thomas was present as Jesus appeared to them. With him, listen to Jesus invite you to touch His wounds. Profess with Thomas, “My Lord and my God!” Repeat that prayer and try to sense Thomas’ newfound passionate belief. It is that belief our Lord desires from all of us who do not see with our eyes but come to know Him in our spirit.

My Lord and my God! I do believe in You and profess that belief with all my heart. When I struggle with my faith, when I falter, or when I become distracted from my life of prayer and devotion, please remind me of Saint Thomas. Place his words repeatedly on my lips so that I may continuously cry out with him, “My Lord and my God!” Saint Thomas, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You. amen.
