💧 Harvesting rain, sustaining life.
This rain catchment system is especially helpful during the dry season, particularly for seedlings and newly transplanted plants. With a capacity of 2,400 gallons, it can sustain one garden area for more than six weeks during a drought—and even longer with proper management.
To extend our water supply, we practice mulching and cover cropping to help retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation. We have also installed a similar system in our reforestation area.
In preparation for drought conditions, we dig holes near timber and fruit trees and fill them with a mixture of biochar and vermicast, then cover them with banana trunks. This improves the soil’s ability to hold and store water, making it more accessible to fruit trees and hardwood species during dry periods.
Additionally, we maintain a standby rainwater catchment system in the reforestation area to support manual watering of newly planted seedlings when needed. 💧🌱
