In the recent report by the Department of Health (DOH), there have been 5,101 newly reported HIV cases from January to March 2025, of which 4,849 are males and 252 are females, with an average of 57 cases per day, posing an urgent call for public awareness.
Locally, the 2024 annual report of the General Santos City Health Office (GSCHO) has recorded 70 out of 98 (71.24%) new HIV infection cases involving young people aged 15-29 years old, highlighting dominance with males at 89 and females at only nine (9).
Barangay Calumpang was reported to have the most cases in 2024, with 23, ranging from ages 15 to 39 years old, followed by Barangay Lagao with (12), Barangay Tambler with eight (8), Barangay Apopong and San Isidro with seven (7), Barangay Fatima and Mabuhay with five (5), Barangay City Heights and Conel with four (4), Barangay Bula with three (3), Barangay Baluan, San Jose, and Sinawal with two (2), and only one (1) case recorded in the barangays of Dadiangas East, West, Ligaya, Olympog, Bawing, and Upper Labay.
Meanwhile, five (5) barangays are claimed to be HIV/AIDS-free, namely Barangay Batomelong, Baluan, Dadiangas North, Katangawan, and Tinagacan.
The results reaffirm that HIV infections continue to be a threat to people of all ages, regardless of s*x or gender orientation, as data revealed a striking gender breakdown, with 94% of new HIV reported cases being men and only 6% being women.
To prevent HIV, the DOH and GSCHO advises the public to practice safe s*x by properly using condoms, not sharing needles or syringes, and visiting to the nearest HIV testing center.
Moreover, the public calls for an urgent response from the government to reassess existing programs and ensure the effectiveness, availability, and accessibility of services.
