Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death in the Philippines, with ischemic heart disease ranking as the top cause of mortality among Filipinos. Although these conditions are often chronic, many cases are preventable through early detection, proper management, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Cardiovascular disease refers to problems affecting the heart and blood vessels. A common cause is the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, which can block blood flow and lead to heart attacks or strokes. Conditions under CVD include coronary artery disease, hypertension, stroke, and rheumatic heart disease.
Many risk factors are linked to daily habits. Smoking, diets high in salt and fat, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol intake increase the risk. Health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes also play a major role. While age and family history cannot be changed, they make regular check-ups even more important.
Monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar, and body weight helps prevent complications. Simple steps such as eating balanced meals, exercising regularly, managing stress, and avoiding to***co can greatly reduce the risk of heart disease.
As we begin March, this also echoes the message highlighted during Februaryโs World Heart Month. The post may be slightly late, but caring for the heart should never be limited to a single month. Awareness does not end with the calendar. Small, steady changes can protect your health in the long run.
