“Prudence: The Light of Judgment—or the Shadow of Neglect?”

You call it wisdom. You call it caution.
But tell me, my Brother… is it truly Prudence—
or simply delay in disguise?

Every Master Mason has heard of Prudence—
that steady guide of judgment,
that quiet voice urging us to act with care and foresight.
We admire it. We speak of it. We claim it. But how often do we misuse it?

In the Lodge, a Brother hesitates to speak—
“Out of prudence,” he says. A needed correction is left unsaid—
“To avoid conflict,” he reasons.

A struggling Brother is noticed… but not approached—
“Perhaps it is not my place.” And so we remain silent.
Inactive. Comfortably still. But is that Prudence…
or neglect wearing a respectable name?

True Prudence does not paralyze—it clarifies.

It does not silence truth—it refines how truth is spoken.
It does not prevent action— it guides action to be just, timely, and necessary.

Prudence is not fear. It is not avoidance. It is not convenience.
It is disciplined judgment— the balance between courage and restraint.

And here lies the quiet struggle within our Craft:
We are taught to act with wisdom… yet we sometimes use that teaching
to excuse our inaction.

We wait for the “perfect moment.” We justify our silence.
We convince ourselves we are being careful—when in truth, we are simply being comfortable.

This is not a rebuke, my Brother—
but a mirror. For every Mason, at some point,
must ask himself: Am I exercising Prudence…
or hiding behind it?

Because the Light of Prudence should guide our steps—
not keep us standing still in the dark.

So the next time you choose silence over speech,
delay over decision, distance over duty—

pause and reflect.

And ask yourself, my Brother—

Is this the Light of Prudence…
or the shadow of neglect?

“Temperance: The Virtue Most Spoken… Yet Least Practiced.”

We speak of it with ease. We teach it with confidence.
But tell me, my Brother… do we truly live it?
Every Master Mason knows Temperance—
that quiet virtue urging moderation, balance, and self-control.

It is one of the first lessons we receive. One of the most often repeated. One of the easiest to explain. And yet… perhaps the hardest to apply.

Consider the familiar scenes within our Lodge life: A discussion grows heated—voices rise, tempers follow. A difference of opinion becomes a matter of pride. A careless word is spoken… and just as quickly regretted. Outside the Lodge, it is no different.
Impatience in traffic. Frustration at work. Harsh words at home.
In those moments, Temperance is not forgotten— it is simply set aside.

And so we must ask: Why is the virtue we speak of most…the one we struggle with most?
Because Temperance demands mastery—not of others, but of oneself.
It calls us to pause when we wish to react, to listen when we wish to argue,
to restrain when we wish to indulge. It is not weakness. It is not silence.
It is strength under control.

Here lies the quiet truth: It is easy to be temperate in theory. It is difficult to be temperate in practice— especially when emotions are stirred and pride is tested. Yet that is precisely where the virtue proves its worth. Not in calm moments…
but in challenging ones.

This is not a rebuke, my Brother—but a shared reflection. For every Mason, no matter how long in the Craft, is still working the rough ashlar within.
And Temperance is one of the finest tools we are given—if only we choose to use it.

So the next time your patience is tested, your pride provoked, or your emotions stirred—
pause. Not because you have no voice, but because you have mastery.
And then ask yourself, my Brother— Do I merely speak of Temperance…
or do I truly practice it when it matters most?

“You Walk Upon the Mosaic… But Do You Walk in Harmony?”

You step upon it every meeting.
You cross it without hesitation.
But tell me, my Brother… do you truly walk in harmony—or merely walk across it?

Every Master Mason knows the Mosaic Pavement—that checkered floor of light and dark,
reminding us of the dual nature of human life. Joy and sorrow. Success and failure.
Peace and conflict. We see it. We recognize it. We even explain it.
But do we live its lesson?

In the Lodge, we call each other “Brother”— yet how quickly harmony is tested when opinions differ. A decision does not go our way… and silence turns heavy. A word is misunderstood… and distance quietly grows.
A Brother falls short… and judgment rises faster than understanding.
And so, while we walk upon the Mosaic, we sometimes fail to walk with one another.

The pavement was never meant to divide us— but to remind us.
That light cannot exist without darkness. That differences are not threats—
but opportunities for balance. Harmony is not the absence of disagreement.
It is the presence of respect despite it.

And here lies the deeper challenge: It is easy to stand on the side of light
when all is agreeable. But can we remain composed
when standing upon the darker squares? Can we extend patience
when we feel wronged? Can we choose unity
when division seems easier?

This is not a correction, my Brother— but an invitation.
To look beyond the pattern beneath your feet and examine the path within your heart.
Because the true Mason is not known by where he stands on the Mosaic…
but by how he walks across it.

So the next time you enter the Lodge, pause. Feel the ground beneath you.
Remember what it represents. And ask yourself, my Brother—
Am I walking in harmony with my Brethren… or merely walking among them?

“The Tessellated Border: Life’s Duality—Are You in Balance or Conflict?”

You’ve seen it countless times.
It surrounds the Lodge—quiet, constant, unchanging.
But tell me, my Brother… is it only a border you observe—
or a boundary you understand?

Every Master Mason recognizes the Tessellated Border—
that intricate line enclosing the sacred space of our labors.
It is elegant. It is symbolic. It is… often overlooked.
Because we focus on what is within—and forget the lesson that lies around it.

The Border teaches duality—not as division, but as design. Light and darkness.
Order and chaos. Joy and sorrow. Not enemies… but elements.
Yet outside the Lodge, how often do we struggle with this balance?

A Brother succeeds—and envy quietly stirs. A disagreement arises—and harmony gives way to division. A challenge appears—and we resist, rather than reflect.
We seek comfort in the light…and reject the lessons found in the dark.

But the Tessellated Border reminds us: Life is not meant to be one or the other.
It is meant to be understood as both. Balance is not achieved by avoiding difficulty—
but by learning from it. Harmony is not found in sameness—
but in the proper arrangement of differences.

And here lies the deeper question: Are we truly balancing the dualities of life—
or are we allowing them to pull us apart? Do we respond with understanding…
or react with impulse? Do we build harmony…
or contribute to quiet conflict?

This is not a judgment, my Brother—but a reflection we all must face.
For the Border does not only surround the Lodge—
it surrounds our lives. Every decision we make…
every word we speak…every action we take—either brings balance…
or breeds conflict.

So the next time you behold the Tessellated Border, pause.
Do not merely admire its design—consider its meaning.
And ask yourself, my Brother—Am I living in balance with life’s dualities…
or am I in quiet conflict with them?

The Officers and Brethren of General Llanera Masonic Lodge No. 168, F. & A.M., with hearts filled with sympathy and fraternal concern, paid a visit to the wake and viewing of Mrs. Esperanza Briones Tiangco, the beloved mother of our dear Brother Marvin Tiangco.

In this moment of sorrow and mourning, the Brethren gathered not only to extend their deepest condolences, but also to demonstrate the true spirit of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth — the sacred principles upon which our Fraternity stands. Through our presence, prayers, and fraternal support, we sought to offer comfort and strength to Brother Marvin and his bereaved family during this difficult time.

As Masons, we are taught that while earthly life is temporary, the bonds of love, family, and fraternity endure beyond the trials of this mortal existence. May the Great Architect of the Universe grant eternal peace to the soul of Mrs. Esperanza Briones Tiongco, and may He bestow upon the family the courage, faith, and consolation needed in this hour of grief.

Though words may never fully ease the pain of loss, may the warm embrace of family, friends, and brethren remind them that they do not walk this path of sorrow alone.

“Wisdom, Strength, Beauty—Do You Reflect Them or Merely Recite Them?”

There are words, my Brother, that every Master Mason knows—
words spoken in the Lodge with confidence, precision, and familiarity:

Wisdom… Strength… Beauty.

They are not foreign to us. We have heard them often.
We have recited them without hesitation.
We have even explained them to others.

But let us ask, with the honesty that the Craft requires—Do we live them… or do we merely repeat them?
For it is one thing to speak of Wisdom,
and quite another to act with discernment when emotion clouds judgment.

It is one thing to admire Strength,
and quite another to stand firm in what is right when it costs us comfort, approval, or ease.

It is one thing to appreciate Beauty,
and quite another to bring harmony into a world often marked by discord, division, and indifference.

Brethren, these are not ornamental virtues.
They are pillars—meant not only to support the Lodge, but to sustain the life of every Mason who truly understands the Work.

Wisdom is not measured by how much we know, but by how rightly we apply what we have learned. Do we listen more than we speak? Do we seek truth… or simply defend our opinions? Strength is not proven in moments of ease,
but in times of pressure.

Do we uphold our obligations when tested?
Do we remain steady when circumstances tempt us to compromise?

Beauty is not merely seen—it is created.

Do our words bring peace or division?
Do our actions reflect kindness, patience, and understanding?
Do we leave the world—even in the smallest measure—better than we found it?

Too often, my Brother, we become fluent in the language of Masonry…
but hesitant in the practice of it.

We can explain the pillars— but do we stand upon them?
We can recite their meanings—but do others see them in us?
Because the world does not hear our ritual— it observes our conduct.

It does not measure our memory—it measures our character.
And in that silent observation, a question is asked of each of us—

When men look upon you, do they see a Mason who embodies Wisdom, Strength, and Beauty… or one who simply knows the words?

Brethren, the pillars were not placed before us to be admired from a distance.
They were meant to be built within us—slowly, deliberately, and faithfully.

So tonight, let us reflect—not in pride, but in purpose—

Are we merely repeating what we have been taught…
or are we becoming what we were meant to be?

“BECOMING BETTER MASONS”
A Reflection on the Theme of Most Worshipful Grand Master MW Robert Joseph S. Moran, Jr.

By Bro. Joni Cabrera
General Llanera Masonic Lodge No. 168 F. & A.M.

Freemasonry was never intended to make a man merely knowledgeable in ritual, nor simply proficient in memorization. It was designed to transform the heart, refine the character, and awaken the conscience. Thus, the theme of our Most Worshipful Grand Master, MW Robert Joseph S. Moran, Jr., “Becoming Better Masons,” is not merely a yearly slogan—it is a profound call to labor upon our own rough ashlar.

To become a better Mason is to understand that the Apron we wear is more than a badge of membership; it is a constant reminder of purity of life and rectitude of conduct. It challenges us daily to examine ourselves, not by the standards of the world, but by the immutable principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

A better Mason is not measured by the number of meetings attended, nor by titles and honors received, but by the quiet and sincere practice of Masonic virtues in his home, workplace, community, and Lodge. He is one who listens with patience, speaks with kindness, judges with fairness, and acts with humility.

In a world often divided by pride, anger, and selfish ambition, Freemasonry reminds us that true greatness is found in service. The better Mason seeks not recognition, but usefulness; not applause, but purpose. He understands that the strongest pillars of the Craft are not built from stone, but from integrity, compassion, fidelity, and moral courage.

This theme also reminds us that becoming better is a continuous journey. No Mason can claim perfection, for every Brother remains a work in progress. Each degree teaches us lessons not only to be recited, but to be lived. Every gavel stroke upon the rough ashlar symbolizes the daily effort to remove our imperfections and bring ourselves closer to that spiritual temple not made with hands.

As Masons under the jurisdiction of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of the Philippines, may we answer this call with sincerity and renewed dedication. Let us strengthen our Lodges through harmony, deepen our understanding through education, and illuminate our communities through acts of charity and good example.

For in truth, the future of Freemasonry does not depend solely on increasing our numbers, but on improving ourselves. When a Mason becomes better, the Lodge becomes stronger; when the Lodge becomes stronger, the Fraternity becomes brighter.

May we therefore continue to walk uprightly before God and man, ever striving to become not only better Masons, but better men.

“Black and White Beneath Your Feet—But Do You Understand Life’s Balance?”

Every time you enter the Lodge, my Brother, you walk upon it—
the Mosaic Pavement, checkered in black and white, stretching before you as both a path and a silent lesson.

You have crossed it countless times.
You have stood upon it during solemn moments.
You have looked at it… but have you truly seen it?

For it is more than a design beneath your feet—
it is a reflection of the life you live.

The black and white squares speak plainly, yet profoundly:
that life is not composed of light alone, nor shadow alone—but of both, interwoven in divine balance.

Joy and sorrow.
Success and failure.
Certainty and doubt.

Each step you take, whether upon the Pavement or in life, moves you across these contrasts.

But here lies the deeper question, Brother—

Do you walk with understanding… or merely with habit?

When fortune smiles upon you, do you remain humble?
When trials visit you, do you remain steadfast?
When you stand in the light, do you remember the lessons of darkness?
And when you find yourself in darkness, do you trust that light will return?

The Mosaic Pavement does not promise a life free from hardship.
It teaches you how to walk through it.

It reminds us that balance is not found in avoiding one side,
but in learning to stand firm in both.

Too often, we seek only the white squares—comfort, recognition, ease.
And when the black squares come—as they inevitably do—we falter, question, or retreat.

Yet a Master Mason is not made in the light alone.
He is tempered in the contrast.

The Pavement also teaches another truth—one we sometimes overlook:

That all men walk upon the same floor.

No man is exempt from struggle.
No Brother is without burden.
Behind the titles, the aprons, the honors—we all tread the same alternating path of human experience.

So before we judge… let us remember.
Before we speak… let us understand.
Before we turn away… let us extend the hand of a Brother who knows what it is to walk both light and shadow.

Brethren, the Mosaic Pavement is not merely beneath you—
it is within you.

And the question is not whether life contains both black and white—
it always will.

The question is—

Can you walk it with wisdom, with balance, and with the dignity of a Master Mason?
