In science, a species is considered โ€œlostโ€ when it hasnโ€™t been seen or recorded through field collections, photographs, or other forms of documentation for over 50 years. In the Philippines, some of these species have recently been rediscovered in the very locations where they were first found and described, known as their "type localities."

Such is the case for Mt. Alzapan, a mountain in Luzon first visited by Filipino botanists Maximo Ramos and Gregorio Edaรฑo in 1925. Their expedition led to the discovery of at least 25 new plant species, many of which had not been seen again, until now.

A new study has confirmed the rediscovery of Mt. Alzapan inside the Amro River Protected Landscape (ARPL) in Aurora Province. Locally known as โ€œMt. Alsapan,โ€ its identity was verified through a combination of historical maps and herbarium records, interviews with local guides and rangers, and recent sightings of rare and endemic plants.

This discovery is more than just putting a name back on the map. It marks a significant milestone for Philippine biodiversity. With Mt. Alzapan back on the scientific radar, researchers now have the opportunity to search for other species previously thought to be extinct in the area and to help strengthen conservation efforts in the region.

This research was led by the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative, in collaboration with scientists from UP Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, and with the invaluable support of local communities and environmental authorities in Aurora. Furthermore, this emphasizes the importance of taxonomy in research in the protection of biodiversity in the country.

Congratulations to Abigail Garrino and Johnny Altomonte of the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative for being selected as 2025 EDGE Fellows by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL)!

As part of this prestigious program, Abi and Johnny will be working over the next two years to champion some of the worldโ€™s most evolutionarily distinct and endangered species.

Abi and Johnny envision a future where their selected EDGE species (๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ข ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ช in the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park and threatened species of Pandanus in the Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed Forest Reserve) are cherished, formally recognized, and protected through local community stewardship and integration into forest management plans.

Through the EDGE Fellowship, theyโ€™ll receive advanced conservation training, long-term support, and access to a network of international conservationists, all while representing the Philippines on the global stage!

Weโ€™re incredibly proud of their continued work in research, field conservation, and raising awareness for our countryโ€™s most unique and threatened wildlife.

Mabuhay kayo, Abi and Johnny! ๐Ÿ’š

New Described Species Alert!

๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’†๐’๐’‚๐’“๐’Š๐’‚ ๐’…๐’Š๐’˜๐’‚๐’•๐’‚, a new species from Mt. Malinao, Albay Province, Luzon Island,
Philippines

Published today - ๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’†๐’๐’‚๐’“๐’Š๐’‚ ๐’…๐’Š๐’˜๐’‚๐’•๐’‚ is a terrestrial orchid discovered in the mossy forests of Mt. Malinao.

The new species most closely resembles the Taiwanese species ๐˜. ๐˜ต๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ข T.P.Lin, but is distinguished from it by its shorter lateral sepals, anterior petal lobes that are mostly entire, with the lower margin lacerate or unequally bifid at the apex, a shorter labellum base, and labellum side lobes subdivided into two filiform segments. The orchidโ€™s pale, whitish green flowers and fleeting presence echo the mystical โ€œdiwataโ€ of Philippine folklore.

The species is assessed as Critically Endangered, based on the IUCN criteria and categories. The discovery raises the current number of recognized Habenaria species in the Philippines to 22. This research is the result of a fruitful collaboration between researchers from the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative and the University of the Philippines Visayas.

Published today โ€“ A significant update in Philippine Begonia research features both the formal description of a new species and the amended distribution of an existing one, both found within the forests of Aurora Memorial National Park (AMNP), Luzon Island.

๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’ˆ๐’๐’๐’Š๐’‚ ๐’”๐’–๐’ƒ๐’‚๐’†๐’’๐’–๐’Š๐’‡๐’๐’๐’Š๐’‚, a new species of Begonia from Aurora Memorial National Park (AMNP), Luzon Island, Philippines
A new species, ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’ˆ๐’๐’๐’Š๐’‚ ๐’”๐’–๐’ƒ๐’‚๐’†๐’’๐’–๐’Š๐’‡๐’๐’๐’Š๐’‚ Y.P.Ang & J.Collantes, has been officially described from Luzon Island, specifically within the rich forests of the Aurora Memorial National Park (AMNP). The new population was found in well-shaded, humid forest interiors of tropical lowland evergreen rainforests. It was also seen along forest trails with clay-loam soil rich in humus and leaf litter, where it grows under a dense canopy.

It closely resembles ๐˜‰. ๐˜ซ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช, but is set apart by having a smaller stipule, a sub-symmetrically oblong-ovate to narrowly elliptic-ovate lamina, pinnate venation, crenate or serrulate leaf margin, a dichasial cymose staminate inflorescence, and smaller staminate flower tepals. The proposed IUCN status for ๐˜‰. ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฆ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ข is Endangered based on its restricted range, small subpopulations, and ongoing habitat threats such as forest loss, water resource decline, and human disturbance.

๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’ˆ๐’๐’๐’Š๐’‚ ๐’๐’๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’Š โ€“ Amended Description Published!
The known distribution of ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ข ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช Merr., previously known to only be found in Angilog, Rizal Province, now has new records within the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, particularly in the well-shaded areas of the montane forests of AMNP.

This new species description and updated distribution record were made possible through the continued field efforts of the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative, in collaboration with Palawan State University, the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, and Texas Christian University.
