Peatlands are known to provide water regulation ecosystem services and have been seen as nature’s sponges as they absorb water during wet periods, which in turn mitigates floods, and slowly release it during the dry season. They also serve as storages for carbon which lessens the effects of climate change.

Within the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor lies the Caimpugan Peatland of Agusan del Sur. It is considered as one of the most carbon-dense terrestrial ecosystems in the Philippines and supports a high level of biodiversity which eventually provides livelihood opportunities to local communities within the peatland. In the Mindoro Biodiversity Corridor, the Kisloyan Peatland serves as a water basin that prevents soil erosion in the upland areas of the municipality of Victoria.

Let’s take this time to realize that even peatlands make a huge impact in sustaining and protecting the shared landscapes and benefits to both people and biodiversity!

Shera has spent nearly two decades as one of the Smithsonian National Zoo’s most recognizable lions. 🦁 Now, zoo staff are preparing to say goodbye.

On May 5, 2026, the zoo announced that Shera, a 21-year-old African lion, will soon be humanely euthanized because of worsening mobility problems tied to old age. According to the zoo, Shera has severe osteoarthritis and has become increasingly unsteady moving through her indoor and outdoor habitats.

Shera arrived in Washington, D.C., in 2006 alongside her sister Nababiep and male lion Luke. Over the years, she became a mother to eight cubs and helped establish a lion bloodline that now includes nearly 50 descendants living in zoos across the United States.

Zoo officials say the decision was not based on a sudden emergency. Instead, veterinarians and keepers evaluated her long-term quality of life, especially her ability to move safely and comfortably without reaching a crisis point.

For many visitors, Shera became more than an exhibit animal. She became part of the zoo’s identity, and her final chapter is also a reminder of the emotional responsibility involved in caring for aging wildlife.

This year, we need more paparazzi, and migratory birds are the perfect subject!

For survival, migratory birds travel thousands of miles twice a year – braving the elements and natural predators. This is the reason tracking them requires our collective effort.

And you don’t need fancy equipment for this! Reporting your backyard sightings, local wetland bird counts, and daily observations provides vital data that helps us protect these critical species and their habitats.

Want to know more about how we can further help our long-haul travellers?Watch this video to learn how the ASEAN Flyway Network is connecting countries, communities, and conservationists to protect our shared flyways:
