Today, April 22, is Earth Day—a global call to protect and preserve the environment we all share. This year’s theme highlights the urgency of caring for our planet by taking meaningful steps toward sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Our natural resources are not unlimited, and the way we care for them today will shape the world we live in tomorrow. Let us reduce, reuse, and respect nature in every little way we can.

🕊️ | These woven leaves used for palaspas come from the 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺 (Cocos nucifera)!

Often called the “Tree of Life,” coconut palms are native to the tropical coasts of Southeast Asia. Their fronds are traditionally woven into palaspas to commemorate Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem during Palm Sunday.

Beyond their spiritual significance, coconut palms play a vital role in coastal ecosystems—helping prevent shoreline erosion while providing habitat for wildlife such as fruit bats and coconut crabs. 🌿

Remarkably, every part of the tree serves a purpose, from its fruit for water and oil, to its trunk for timber, and husk for fuel, making it one of the most versatile plants in the world.

🕊️ | For our February Species of the Month, we’re featuring the vibrant 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 (Aplonis panayensis)!

Locally known as galansiyang, this striking bird is commonly found across Negros, thriving in forests, farmlands, and even urban areas. With its glossy black feathers, greenish sheen, and bright red eyes, it feeds on fruits and insects, playing an important role in seed dispersal and pest control. 🌿

Currently listed as Least Concern, the Asian glossy starling remains widespread and adaptable. Fun fact: it’s known for being very noisy, often seen moving in loud, energetic flocks!

🐦‍⬛ | We’re back with our Species of the Month series, starting this January with the 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄 (𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙫𝙪𝙨 𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙨)!

Often seen but rarely appreciated, this intelligent bird is 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 and can be found in forests, farmlands, and even urban areas. Known for its glossy black feathers and adaptability, the jungle crow plays an important role in the ecosystem as a scavenger and opportunistic feeder, helping keep environments balanced. 🌿
While currently considered common, protecting diverse habitats remains essential to ensuring that native species like the Philippine jungle crow continue to thrive.

🌊 #𝖣𝗂𝖽𝖸𝗈𝗎𝖪𝗇𝗈𝗐 | This November, our 𝐄𝐜𝐨 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 is the Marine Pollution Decree of 1976 (Presidential Decree No. 979)!

This law protects our oceans and inland waters by prohibiting the dumping of waste, oil, and hazardous materials that harm marine ecosystems. It also empowers the Philippine Coast Guard and DENR-EMB to enforce measures that keep our waters clean and thriving.

🌏 Our seas are home to countless species and provide livelihoods to millions of Filipinos, keeping them pollution free means safeguarding life itself. Let’s honor this law by saying no to marine pollution and yes to protecting our blue planet! 💙🐚

🌏 | This November, we celebrate the National Environmental Awareness Month, a time to reflect on our connection with nature and our shared responsibility to protect it. 🌿

As the late Regina Paz Lopez, former DENR Secretary, once said:
“For me, the environment has always been about people... How can you help the people if the air is dirty, the water is dirty, polluted?”

Let’s honor her legacy by taking small but meaningful steps choosing sustainability, raising awareness, and protecting the world we all call home. 💚

🦌 | For our November Species of the Month, we’re featuring the elegant 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗿 (Rusa alfredi)!

This small and rare deer is 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀, found only in the islands of 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘀 and 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘆. Recognized by its dark coat marked with pale white spots, it thrives in dense forests where it feeds on grasses and shoots, helping maintain the natural balance of its habitat. 🌿

Sadly, the Visayan Spotted Deer is currently listed as 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 due to habitat loss and hunting. With fewer than a few hundred believed to remain in the wild, every effort to protect and restore their forests brings this rare deer one step closer to survival.

🐭 | For our October Species of the Month, we’re featuring the elusive 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘄 (𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙖 𝙣𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙖)!

This small, insect-eating mammal is 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 and is one of the 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀. It plays an important role in its ecosystem by controlling insect populations and contributing to soil health through its foraging habits.

Unfortunately, the Negros Shrew is currently listed as 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 ‼️ 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 caused by deforestation and agricultural expansion, its remaining home is now limited to the island’s shrinking montane and mossy forests. Because it is rarely seen and has a small population, every conservation effort counts in keeping this species alive. 🌿
