The Philippine Duck (𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘴 𝘭𝘶𝘻𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢), or locally known as papan, is a species found only in the Philippines. From skimming the surface of wetlands to helping maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems, this endemic duck plays a quiet but important role in nature.

As wetlands continue to face different environmental threats, protecting species like the Philippine Duck becomes even more important. Learning about our native wildlife is one small step toward appreciating and conserving the rich biodiversity our country is known for.

On this day, 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 14, 2026, we celebrate 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆—a day dedicated to appreciating one of the ocean's most important yet misunderstood creatures.

𝘋𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩'𝘴 𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 400 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴?
—> That's 𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 before dinosaurs ever walked the Earth and even before the first trees existed! 🌲🦖

They're not the monsters they're often made out to be. They're the guardians that keep our marine ecosystems in balance. As apex predators, sharks 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, ensuring healthy and thriving oceans for countless species.

Today, let's celebrate these incredible creatures by learning the truth about them, raising awareness, and supporting efforts to protect them for generations to come.

Our natural resources are not unlimited, and the way we care for them today will shape the world we live in tomorrow. Let us reduce, reuse, and respect nature in every little way we can.

🕊️ | These woven leaves used for palaspas come from the 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺 (Cocos nucifera)!

Often called the “Tree of Life,” coconut palms are native to the tropical coasts of Southeast Asia. Their fronds are traditionally woven into palaspas to commemorate Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem during Palm Sunday.

Beyond their spiritual significance, coconut palms play a vital role in coastal ecosystems—helping prevent shoreline erosion while providing habitat for wildlife such as fruit bats and coconut crabs. 🌿

Remarkably, every part of the tree serves a purpose, from its fruit for water and oil, to its trunk for timber, and husk for fuel, making it one of the most versatile plants in the world.

Maligayang Linggo ng Palaspas sa inyong lahat! 🌿

🕊️ | For our February Species of the Month, we’re featuring the vibrant 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 (Aplonis panayensis)!

Locally known as galansiyang, this striking bird is commonly found across Negros, thriving in forests, farmlands, and even urban areas. With its glossy black feathers, greenish sheen, and bright red eyes, it feeds on fruits and insects, playing an important role in seed dispersal and pest control. 🌿

Currently listed as Least Concern, the Asian glossy starling remains widespread and adaptable. Fun fact: it’s known for being very noisy, often seen moving in loud, energetic flocks!
