Museo Dipolog joins the nation in profound sorrow over the passing of Dr. Resil Buagas Mojares yesterday, September 5, 2026, at the age of 83. While his loss reverberates across the country, it is felt with distinct and intimate grief by those who understood that his high intellect never severed its roots from his homeland.
Dr. Mojares was a prolific historian, literary critic, author, and essayist whose body of work redefined perspectives on Visayan literature and scholarship, with his influence extending far beyond Cebu and the Visayas. He was a Carlos Palanca Memorial awardee for Short Story in 1971, and in 2018, was conferred the highest cultural honor as National Artist for Literature. In Dipolog, he was likewise honored as a Pangadlaw Awardee for his outstanding contributions to his field as a Dipolognon. His legacy is even made stronger by being the founder of the Cebuano Studies Center within the University of San Carlos in 1975 to champion regional history and culture.
Born in Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte, โThe Visayan Titan of Lettersโ, as he became known, remained, in spirit and affinity, a proud Dipolognon despite spending the greater part of his career in Cebu City. His passing is therefore not merely a national loss, but a local bereavement, for Dipolog/Zamboanga del Norte has lost a son whose life's work proved that world-class thought and output could emanate from the minds hailing from this humble part of the country.
In this moment of mourning, Museo Dipolog extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, friends, students, and colleagues of Dr. Mojares. May his works continue to illuminate our history, culture, and the arts, and may his memory be enshrined in the cultural consciousness of the city he never ceased to call home.
