RAISE YOUR FLAG | A SYMBOL OF PRIDE

The Rainbow Flag has been part of the LGBT movement since 1978, when, at the request of Harvey Milk, activist and artist Gilbert Baker (1951–2017) designed it in his studio in San Francisco. When Milk said 'It's not about personal gain, it's not about ego, it's not about power, it's about giving those young people out there hope,' he led the way for every LGBT movement since. Baker went beyond Milk's challenge, describing his method with the words, 'A true flag cannot be designed – it has to be torn from the souls of the people.'

Originally it was eight colors strong – pink and turquoise were dropped to make mass production easier – and each color means something. Pink, now gone, meant s*xuality. Red means life, orange means healing, and yellow means sunlight. Green represents nature, turquoise art, blue harmony, and violet means spirit. This mix of colors in a harmonious and natural form also signifies the togetherness of the LGBT community. It has been at every single Gay Pride march ever since and has recently been projected onto some of the most famous buildings in the world.

THE LGBTQIA COMMUNITY FACES A TWOFOLD PROBLEM REGARDING GENDER EQUALITY IN THE PHILIPPINES.

To begin with, the community faces increased rates of violence and abuse against it from individuals called “Anti-LGBTQ.” On the other hand, they faced limitations, burdens, and gatekeeping along the already thorny path of human disruption to recovery. There has been progress over the past twenty (20) years in the legal landscape and the evolution of social opinions and attitudes about an individual’s s*xuality, gender identity, and gender expression. Nevertheless, members of the LGBTQ community still suffer destructive and blatant gender bias in all public and intimate living areas. A growing number of laws around the country are being legislated under the impression of religious freedom that curtails – even eliminates – the rights of LGBTQ individuals. Similarly, homophobia, affliction, and discomfort with individuals who do not conform to old-fashioned stereotypes of gender and s*x often embody the continuous discrimination against these individuals.

In a changing world, the principles that guide our work matter more than ever. That’s why, over the last four years, we have begun a critical shift in the way we administer our assistance. We’re pioneering a new model of development that places a greater emphasis on diversity to empower the world’s most vulnerable people. Instead of focusing solely on delivering assistance, we’re engaging widely to ensure development is inclusive of the partners we work with and the local communities we reach. SJAI Student Advocates Proposed Advocacy Key to that effort is protecting and advancing LGBTQIA human rights around the world.
