Locally produced biostimulant, made from locally farmed seaweeds, for local agri farmers.

Agricultural biostimulant made from locally farmed seaweeds is now being produced in the Municipality of Dimataling, Zamboanga Del Sur, Philippines, as part of the UNDP's Blue Innovation Challenge we have participated in for the past 6 months in partnership with Climate Foundation.

To commemorate this big milestone for economic development in Dimataling, 90L of biostimulant was given out to 26 local agricultural farmers currently participating in the "Balik Probinsya" program of the government. Mayor Abel Yrauda, who is a farmer himself, is a big supporter of the biostimulant and its effects, happily introducing us to the farmers at the event.

A 25% improvement in agricultural yields on average has been demonstrated over dozens of trials, and also improvements in harvest quality and soil health. This improvements will help local farmers to improve their incomes, while achieving needed food security milestones important to the Philippines.

Today we signed with the Dimataling Municipal Government to bring together everything we have been doing in Dimataling over the past 2 years into one document, aligning the company and local government on the path forward.

This is multi-species sustainable farming (integrated multitrophic aquaculture) within a 350 hectare marine protected area (MPA) of seagrass and coral reef. Sea farmer livelihoods will be connected to the success of the MPA - working to safeguard it and removing trash that flows into their area - as part of their formal employment duties. This creates many professional jobs for the municipality, while also achieving strong environmental stewardship outcomes.

In addition to aquaculture and protection of critical marine ecosystems, as a coastal resource management company we are designing a marine use zoning plan which will set the foundation for the upcoming professional industry.

The aquaculture industry is in desperate need of better markets, so a local value-adding industry is being built, turning locally produced seaweeds into liquid biostimulant to be used on agricultural crops - boosting their growth and resilience. This local industry will mean more prosperity for local seaweed and agricultural farmers, who right now are struggling with very low incomes.

We've built a cohesive coastal development masterplan, and are working with our partners in all levels of government, NGO, private industry, academia, and the community, to make it a reality together.

The future of Dimataling is bright, lighting the way for other coastal areas of the Philippines.

A case study arguing for sea cucumber aquaculture written by our Chief Executive Brandon Hargraves has been featured in the September 2021 issue of International Aquafeed, pages 52-55.

In the article, Brandon argues that the viability of mass-scale sustainable aquaculture of sea cucumber has improved to a point where the global market can meaningfully transition away from exploitation of endangered wild stocks. Many hurdles remain, but a strong foundation exists from which a serious industry can be built.
