LOOK: On its third day, the Municipality of Paranas continues to build momentum toward strengthening and expanding its initial (RE) plans and targets through the RE Roadmap Scoping Workshop, currently being held in Palo, Leyte.

The Paranas Technical Working Group (TWG) gained insights into local energy legislation through the experience and leadership of the Provincial Government of Iloilo’s', Board Member Rolando “Rolly” Distura. Building on these discussions, the participants, together with experts from ICSC, explored viable energy tools and systems, and were further strengthened by learning sessions from Development Bank of the Philippines, Land Bank of the Philippines, and Asia Engine for Net Zero on financing opportunities for local and community-based RE initiatives.

The TWG continues to apply knowledge from the learning sessions as they collaborate and refine their RE plan and roadmap, set to be consolidated as the four-day workshop concludes tomorrow.

Facilitated by AktivAsia, this engagement is part of the , an initiative designed to capacitate LGUs in crafting an actionable and sustainable RE plan and roadmap. It is supported by the Tara Climate Foundation and is part of the CASE - Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia project led by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Philippines and the Pacific Island Countries) and implemented on behalf of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

The Philippine power system relies heavily on imported coal for power generation, leaving the country vulnerable to external shocks due to volatility in the global markets: Geopolitical tensions, including disruptions linked to the US-Israel war on Iran, have caused significant increase in coal prices since the conflict began, and earlier this week, Indonesia—the Philippines’ primary source of imported coal—announced plans to regulate its coal exports in response to its domestic priorities.

Amid a shifting global energy landscape, ICSC stresses the urgent need to strengthen the country’s long-term and affordability amid these changes.

“Strengthening our own energy resources is essential to achieving real energy security and protecting consumers from volatile global markets.”

LOOK: The week-long training in Nadi, Fiji, continues as participants deepen their understanding of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for community use.

With guidance from ICSC’s RE-Charge Pilipinas Team, the participants successfully assembled and powered a working system on Day 2 of the workshop. Today, they are set to install the first community PV system at the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) in Lautoka. The second PV system is set to be installed at Yavulo Village, Sigatoka tomorrow, putting the participants’ hands-on learning from the workshop into action.

This initiative is organized in partnership with 350 Pacific, which aims to bring together community leaders from the Pacific, building local capacities on and community-driven across the seas.
