Ever noticed howโ€ฆ

After a long, stressful day,
you just sit beside your dog or catโ€ฆ
and suddenly, you feel a little lighter? ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

No advice.
No deep talk.
Just their presence.

And somehowโ€ฆ it helps.

Hereโ€™s the mind-blowing part.
Science says interacting with pets increases a hormone called ๐˜ฐ๐˜น๐˜บ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฏโ€”also known as the โ€œbonding hormone.โ€

At the same time, it lowers ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ, the stress hormone.

So while you think youโ€™re just โ€œpetting your dogโ€โ€ฆ

Your body is literally calming itself down.

And it doesnโ€™t stop there.

Dogs donโ€™t just sleep beside you for comfort.

They actually feel safer near you,
and their heartbeat and stress levels can sync with yours.

That quiet moment?

Itโ€™s not nothing.

Itโ€™s regulation.
Itโ€™s connection.
Itโ€™s biology.

So next time your pet follows you,
sits near you, or sleeps beside youโ€ฆ

Theyโ€™re not being clingy.
Theyโ€™re co-regulating with you.
Now ask yourselfโ€ฆ

Are they just your petโ€ฆ
or your daily dose of therapy?

As Higher Education Institutions consider shifting fully to online learning due to rising oil prices, the issue goes beyond mere accessibility and convenience. Following the declaration of a State of National Energy Emergency under Executive Order No. 110, s. 2026, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), through Memorandum No. 117, s. 2026, has allowed institutions to temporarily adopt up to 100% online learning, depending on their capacity and studentsโ€™ readiness. Still, this move raises a deeper question about the purpose of education: is it simply about continuing classes despite challenges, or should it also ensure quality learning, genuine engagement, and fairness for all students?

Undeniably, the directive aims to cushion students from the burden of escalating transportation costs. With fares increasing alongside fuel prices, many students, especially those from low-income families, face the daily dilemma of choosing between attending classes and saving money for basic needs. In this light, a 100% online modality appears not only practical but necessary. It allows learning to persist despite economic strain, offering a temporary solution to an urgent national concern.

However, learning is not a one-size-fits-all experience. While some students thrive in virtual environments, others struggle with unstable internet connections, lack of proper devices, and limited spaces conducive to studying. The digital divide remains a pressing issue, and a full transition to online classes risks widening the gap between those who can adapt and those who are left behind. If access is unequal, then learning outcomes inevitably become unequal as well.

Moreover, education is not confined to lectures and submissions. It is also built on interaction, collaboration, and real-life engagementโ€”elements that are often diminished in a purely online setup. The absence of face-to-face discussions, laboratory work, and spontaneous classroom exchanges may lead to a decline in critical thinking and practical skills. In such a setup, compliance may increase, but comprehension may not necessarily follow.

While the shift in modality is necessary, Davao del Sur State College has taken steps to ensure that learning is not compromised. By implementing face-to-face classes on Mondays and Tuesdays, the institution has opted for a balanced approach rather than fully adopting a 100% online modality, recognizing that some aspects of learning are best experienced in person.

Beyond the academic sphere, the shift also ripples through local economies. Small businesses surrounding campusesโ€”canteens, boarding houses, printing shops, and transportation servicesโ€”largely depend on the daily presence of students. A full transition to online learning threatens their primary source of income, placing them in a vulnerable position. For many of these small entrepreneurs, students are not just customers; they are the lifeblood of their livelihood.

Yet, this reality stands in stark contrast to the struggles of students themselves. While small businesses face potential losses, students grapple with the rising cost of living, where even daily commuting becomes a financial burden. The increase in fares does not only affect their ability to attend school but also limits their mobility, opportunities, and overall well-being. In this sense, the shift to online learning becomes both a relief and a trade-offโ€”easing one problem while creating another.

This situation reveals a complex balancing act. On one hand, online learning provides an immediate response to economic pressures. On the other, it raises concerns about educational quality, equity, and community impact. The challenge, therefore, is not simply choosing between online and face-to-face modalities, but finding a middle ground that upholds both accessibility and integrity.

A flexible or hybrid approach may offer a more sustainable solutionโ€”one that reduces transportation costs while preserving essential in-person experiences. At the same time, stronger support systems must be put in place: improved digital infrastructure, accessible learning resources, and assistance for affected local businesses.

Ultimately, a 100% online modality does not automatically equate to 100% learning. Education is a dynamic process that requires more than just accessโ€”it demands inclusivity, engagement, and support. As institutions navigate this transition, the goal should not only be to continue education, but to ensure that it remains meaningful, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all sectors it serves.

Davao Region is home to many talented individuals in different fields of expertise in the Culture and the Arts. Each of which have different skills to share, just like in Musical Arts. There stood a woman of pride, with a voice representing the whole region. As high as Mount Apoโ€™s peak, she reached a milestone, bringing Davao del Sur State College to the national stage.

Nathaniela Lodovice, a BS Development Communication student of Davao del Sur State College proudly represented the Davao Region for the Pop Solo Category in the PASUC National Culture and the Arts Festival 2026 held at West Visayas State University, La Paz, Iloilo City on April 8 to 11, 2026. Among all the regions, she placed a 3rd Runner-Up finish with her rendition of โ€œSino Ang Baliwโ€, testifying that Davao Region is a haven of singers like her.

Yelaโ€™s journey to the national stage started at the PASUC Regional Culture and the Arts Festival. During her preparations, she puts her heart and soul in every lyrics and melody written between every note. She takes everything that she could to bring the best performance to bring pride and honors to DSSC โ€” with that dedication and prayers, she championed her way to represent the DSSC Community and Davao Region for the PASUC NCAF 2026.

โ€œIt is an honor and a privilege to have been given the chance to represent DSSC again on the stage of PASUC RCAF, and I am truly beyond grateful for the resultโ€”it is exactly what I prayed for.โ€ She stated as she expressed her gratitude to represent DSSC again in the RCAF saying that this is the opportunity that made her the best version of herself, as this holds value in her heart.

She then added โ€œI am looking forward to seeing talented people from all around the Philippines, as all 17 regions will compete in the PASUC NCAF.โ€ And as she stressed it she also wants to learn from each region and to experience what Iloilo City has in store for her.

She also left a message for the young girls of DSSC whom she wants to help convey a message through her talent and persistency. โ€œKeep doing what you love, no matter whatโ€”even if you stumble and fall, stand up again and continue moving forward. Let your story inspire others.โ€

As she clinched victory for our college and region she raised the bar high. She rippled the voice that was once spread in a small room, turning the room into a big hall of dreams. Yelaโ€™s victorious feat is a testament that with dedication, persistency, love for talent and prayers, you can achieve whatever dreams you want to achieve in life. There is nothing impossible when you believe, and that is who she is โ€” a prowess of resiliency and a melody that echoes throughout the Philippines.
