Cheers to another year of partnership for Island Education! 🌊📚

We are happy to have signed another year of partnership with the Department of Education – Siargao Division, continuing our shared commitment to children and communities in last-mile areas across Siargao.

This year, our programs are ready to reach even more learners and communities:

🍽️ Daily school feeding will continue for all students of San Mateo Elementary School in Burgos and Abad Santos Elementary School in Sta. Monica.

🏡 We will also pilot a Home Economics and Kitchen Space in Brgy. San Mateo to support practical learning for students and the community.

📚 A new Creative Library Space will be built for the students of Alegria National High School and Elementary School in Sta. Monica.

🎓 Our ISIP Scholars will also continue to receive support for their studies in Del Carmen National High School, Lasala Integrated School, and Suyangan National High School.

None of this would be possible without the trust and partnership of the people who continue to walk alongside us.

Our heartfelt gratitude to SDS Manuel O. Caberte, Michelle Villarosa of Kolekbibo , our school heads and teachers, and all our partners in the community for continuing the cycle of trust we have been building together.

From shared meals to classrooms, libraries, scholarships, and community spaces—we believe education grows stronger when communities build it together.

There are teachers we remember long after we leave their classrooms. 💙

Not only because of the lessons written on the board or the pages we were asked to read, but because of the little things that stay with us. Sometimes we just need at least one person who believes in us, and for many it’s that one teacher who encourages us to keep trying, who has the patience to explain something one more time, and the guide who sees our potential beyond our own selves.

We have had the privilege of working alongside teachers who bring this same care and dedication into the lives of our young learners, and their communities. In classrooms across the communities we serve, we see how their presence can make a child feel seen, supported, and capable of dreaming.

This National Teachers’ Month, we celebrate the teachers who continue to touch the lives of our young learners and help shape the people they are becoming.
For all the days you have shown up for them, Teacher, Ikaw Naman. 💛

What Literacy Looks Like 📖🌱

For a child growing up on an island, literacy can mean having access to books, learning in a language they understand, discovering stories that reflect their community, and gaining the confidence to share stories of their own.

This International Literacy Day, under the theme “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity,” we are reminded that literacy is not only a foundation for learning. It is a pathway toward greater inclusion, sustainable communities, and opportunities for a better future.

Through our Literacy Enrichment Program and Creative Library Spaces, we work to bring meaningful learning opportunities and reading resources closer to children in island communities.

When children have access to stories, they gain more than words. They gain possibilities.

Leadership is not about having a title or a position. It’s about finding ways to contribute, taking action, and making a difference in your community. 🌱

From discovering what leadership truly means, to learning how they can contribute to their communities, making new friends, and creating stories to remember, our SIDLAK Youth Delegates share the experiences, lessons, and memories they will bring with them.

Their journey is only just beginning. The stories, friendships, and lessons they gained will continue beyond the camp and into the communities they call home. 💙

🌊✨ An Pag-sidlak nan Kabatan-unan sa Isla Siargao! ✨🌊

Organized by Calls Over Ridges Philippines and SIKAT, funded by Kinder Not Hilfe and German Cooperation, this was our first youth-level cross-learning visit, centered on island immersion and learning from the experiences and best practices of fellow young people.

Our wonderful hosts, the Paglajag Anajawan Youth of Anajawan, proudly shared their community initiatives, particularly their regular community and beach clean-ups. Their active involvement is a wonderful example of how young people can take the lead in caring for their island and creating positive change in their community.

The youth delegates also took part in Youth Leadership and Values Formation workshops and learned basic project development skills, equipping them with ideas and tools to begin creating sustainable and localized solutions for their own communities.

Salamat karajaw to the teachers, nanays and youth of Anajawan for warmly welcoming our delegates and making sure everyone felt at home and well taken care of.

We chose to hold this visit on your isla not only because of its beautiful waters, but more importantly, because of the initiatives, values, and culture that you have built together as a community. We are proud of you!

And to all our youth delegates from SIKAT, the Local Youth Development Offices of Sta. Monica and Socorro, Socorro Aquatic Biodiversity Association of Youth (SABAY), and Sugod Mam-on—thank you for bringing your energy, curiosity, and ideas to the camp!

May you carry with you the lessons, friendships, and memories from these three days—and look back on this experience with a big smile. 😊💙

This Buwan ng Wika, we celebrate not only the richness of our languages, but also the stories that shape who we are and where we come from.

We’re happy to give you a little glimpse Behind the Book: Sailing Stories with Dandoy Workbook.
For some time, we have been sharing stories written by the proud teachers of Baybay Elementary School through our E-Storya sa Isla Online Storytelling.

Behind every story shared with our young learners are teachers who poured their time, creativity, and heart into making these stories come to life.

Now, we would like to share the story behind the stories—how they were written, developed, and brought together into a workbook.

More than anything, our hope is that this workbook reflects the experiences, community, and stories of our young learners. We hope that seeing their own stories and language in the pages will help them feel connected to what they are learning and proud of where they come from.

Our heartfelt thanks to Teacher Cherimae and Teacher Lyn for sharing your stories with us and giving us the opportunity to bring them to more learners.

We are also grateful to DepEd – Siargao Division for the Quality Assurance and guidance in developing the workbook into classroom-ready material, to Ms. Mikhaella Norlin Magat for the beautiful illustrations, and to Sports City International for supporting this initiative.

Soon, more than 800 copies of the Sailing Stories with Dandoy Workbook will be shared with learners across Siargao.

We hope these stories continue to bring a little piece of home into the classroom—through a language that is familiar, meaningful, and their own. 💙🌊📖

Pamilyang ligtas, pamilyang LIG-ON 💙

For island communities, resilience begins long before a disaster arrives. This National Disaster Resilience Month, we celebrate the power of preparedness and the communities that choose to learn, act, and protect one another.

Through Project LIG-ON, we equip over 100 children and their families with practical disaster preparedness skills that help protect lives, learning, and livelihoods. Alongside our partners from the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Philippine Coast Guard, and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices, since 2025, Project LIG-ON has conducted 3 disaster preparedness workshops across the island communities of Brgy. San Fernando, Sitio Lia-onan, and Sitio Campingganon.

Let’s continue building safer and more resilient island communities through capacity-building, emergency preparedness, and community-led action. 🌊
