Culminating citizen votersโ€™ education in Baganga draws over 100 participants to promote informed and responsible voting

City of Mati โ€“ More than 100 participants gathered in DOrSU Baganga, Davao Oriental, today, May 2, 2025, for the culminating activity of the Voices for Transformation and Emancipation (VoTE) program citizen votersโ€™ education initiative, aimed to empower local communities through sustained electoral education and engagement.

The activity marked the final leg of a series of community-based voter education sessions conducted across Davao Oriental, aiming to deepen the publicโ€™s understanding of their roles and responsibilities in the democratic process.

Spearheaded by the Center for Gender and Development, in collaboration with the Center for Futures Thinking and Regenerative Development, BS Development Communication, AB Political Science and AB Psychology academic programs, the initiative sought to address persistent challenges such as political misinformation and disinformation and vote-buying, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The culminating lecture brought together a diverse group of attendees, including youth leaders and first-time voters. Participants were engaged in an interactive session covering key topics such as โ€˜History of Electionsโ€™ by Ms. Shelly Decenilla, the importance of โ€˜Voting Behavior and Electionsโ€™ by Mr. Niรฑo Ngoho. Meanwhile, Ms. Melrene Isabel Morales discussed the โ€˜Guiding and Action Points for Citizen Voters.โ€™

The attendees pledged to promote responsible voting in their communities and expressed gratitude for DOrSU, highlighting how the sessions clarified misconceptions and enhanced their commitment to civic engagement.

A participant said, โ€œMag tanaw kita sang every candidate ng kanilang personality, track records, and kung genuine ba sila [We should look at each candidateโ€™s personality, track record, and whether they are genuine].โ€

As the 2025 elections draw near, DOrSU team amplifies its campaign on social media to strengthen civic engagement further and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

City of Matiโ€” As part of its continued efforts to promote informed, empowered, and responsible participation in the electoral process among the youth, the Voices for Transformation and Emancipation (VoTE) Program of DOrSU once again conducted its Citizen Votersโ€™ Education session at the Tarragona External Classes today, May 2, 2025, engaging over 100 students in a meaningful discussion on electoral and democratic engagement.

The historical evolution of elections in the Philippines, patterns in voter behavior, and actionable insights for citizen voters were discussed by esteemed speakers from the DOrSU Main Campus: Ms. Shelly April Decenilla, Mr. Nino V. Ngoho, and Ms. Melrene Isabel Morales.

In a powerful session aimed at inspiring civic responsibility, speakers challenged students to take an active role in their communities by emphasizing the importance of informed voting.

Through relatable examples and dynamic discussions, the speakers underscored the necessity of critical thinking and responsible decision-making. They highlighted that civic engagement should extend beyond election periods, calling for ongoing participation in community affairs.
