The Philippines is reinforcing its environmental and climate agenda as the Climate Change Commission gains support for stronger climate programs and institutional capacity. These efforts aim to help communities prepare for climate risks and build a more resilient future.

The country is also emphasizing that environmental commitments must be supported by financing, technology, and technical expertise. Without these resources, climate plans may struggle to become meaningful action.

Protecting the environment requires teamwork. Government agencies, local communities, businesses, schools, and citizens all have important roles in reducing pollution, conserving natural resources, and preparing for extreme weather.

Every Filipino can contribute by minimizing waste, supporting clean energy, protecting forests and coastlines, and participating in local environmental activities. Strong policies become more effective when matched with responsible daily actions.

The Philippines is strengthening its push for a circular economy as government agencies, businesses, communities, and development partners work together to address the country’s plastic and garbage problem. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) says a national plastics roadmap is being prepared to identify gaps and guide future investments in waste management and resource recovery. Smoke Across Borders: Wildfire Haze Hits the Philippines

Smoke from ongoing forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, has reached parts of the Visayas and Mindanao, affecting air quality and raising health concerns. Metro Cebu has reported acutely unhealthy air, prompting eight local government units to suspend face-to-face classes on September 21.

THE FLOOD HAS A STORY

Flooding in Davao Region is not simply about how much rain falls. It is also a hydraulic and solid-waste management problem.

Recent flood-control efforts in Davao City include repairs to the Bangkal flood-control d**e and dredging of the Talomo River. These measures address reduced river capacity and the need to improve water conveyance during heavy rainfall.

Improper waste disposal adds another technical challenge. Garbage can obstruct drainage inlets and waterways, reducing their effective flow capacity and contributing to localized flooding.

The lesson is clear: flood resilience requires functioning drainage systems, maintained waterways, effective flood-control infrastructure, and responsible waste management.

What floats in floodwater is part of the story—and part of the solution.

OUR WATERWAYS ARE NOT GARBAGE BINS 🌊

This week, Davao City renewed calls for stronger waterway maintenance. A proposed resolution urges all 182 barangays to regularly clean and maintain canals, drainage systems, and waterways to support flood mitigation and public health.

The issue is also part of a wider national concern. Recent cleanup operations in Metro Manila removed 1,255 sacks of mixed solid waste from 27 waterways following heavy rains and flooding.

For communities, the message is practical: what we throw away can end up in the drainage system. Plastic, household waste, and other debris can obstruct water flow and make drainage maintenance more difficult.

Let’s keep our canals, creeks, rivers, and drainage inlets clear—not only during floods, but every day.

Where does our trash go when it rains? The answer is increasingly visible in Philippine floodwaters.

Recent flooding has highlighted a technical problem beyond rainfall: drainage capacity is being reduced by solid waste. In Iloilo City, recent declogging operations found bulky waste obstructing waterways, while Metro Manila’s August floods also exposed drainage limitations and large volumes of garbage entering waterways.

From an engineering perspective, plastic bottles, packaging, and illegally dumped bulky materials act as hydraulic obstructions. They reduce the effective cross-sectional area of canals, block inlets and culverts, slow flow, and increase water levels upstream. During intense rainfall, even a partially blocked drainage network can lose conveyance capacity.

The solution is not only bigger flood-control projects. It requires source segregation, reliable collection, routine desilting and declogging, trash screens designed for easy maintenance, drainage monitoring, and enforcement against dumping.

Flood resilience begins before the rain falls—with waste management that works.
