Preparing student responders for emergency situations, the San Pedro College - College Red Cross Youth Council (SPC-CRCY) conducted a comprehensive Emergency First-Aid Training themed โHEROES IN ACTION: Every Second Counts, Every Hand Can Helpโ on Oct. 11 at St. Dominic (SD) 603.
Introducing the organizationโs purpose, core objectives, and operational limitations, first speaker, Philippine Red Cross - Davao City Chapter Instructor Thalia Rose Milla, equipped responders with an understanding of the essence and importance of the CRCY in an institution โ integrating the values and core principles of humanitarian service into their everyday actions.
Speakers Shane Diane Dela Cuesta, Cyril Relampagos, and Reissun Camus discussed the management of common injuries, including bone, joint, and muscle injuries, as well as heat-related emergencies, fainting, and other medical emergencies.
Continuing the session on medical emergencies, Milla provided an overview of common household poisons, where they are typically found, and their immediate first-aid management.
She also highlighted key emergency contacts for responders, emphasizing immediate reporting to the nearest hospital or the National Poison Management and Control Center (NPMCC).
Through the seminar, students reviewed how to identify medical symptoms, what actions to take, and what critical mistakes to avoid during emergencies.
For the second part of the training, responders formed groups to apply previously learned emergency management principles, including bandaging, patient transportation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and other emergency response operations.
โUsually, the lack of proper materials and commitment of students are the root of poor performance,โ Milla noted regarding the gaps schools overlook in emergency preparedness.
Addressing these gaps, Milla emphasized that the true value of first-aid training is its lifelong application, equipping students with essential skills to respond to emergencies properly and share life-saving knowledge with their peers.
"Through training such as this, you are taught how to manage many different kinds of patients โ learn how to be patient," she emphasized, adding that students develop interpersonal skills alongside medical techniques.
She concluded that conducting emergency first-aid training allows student responders to acquire a broad set of skills early on, ensuring they can execute emergency procedures with confidence and care.
Annually, the SPC-CRCY arranges the Emergency First-Aid Training to hone the skills of CRCY responders who serve as frontliners during events and emergencies, reaffirming the councilโs commitment to preparing the next generation to be fully equipped with both competence and compassion.
