𝟕𝟎 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐒 | 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞

“Whatever good I am able to do for my patients, my students, and my community will always carry with it a piece of SPC.”

The halls of San Pedro College once knew Mark Ramon Victor Llanes, RN, MD, FPCP, FPSMID as a nursing student with dreams still taking shape. Today, as an Internal Medicine, Adult Infectious Diseases Specialist and associate professor, he looks back on those years as the foundation of the professional and person he would become.

For Llanes, graduating as Summa Cum Laude was a significant achievement, but his years at SPC gave him lessons that reached beyond academics. In the PL and SD buildings, he developed discipline and a pursuit of excellence.

Through the SALIGAN student council, he learned that leadership is grounded in humility and service. As a volunteer service provider in community extension activities, he encountered the realities of illness and poverty, deepening his commitment to compassionate healthcare.

His knowledge was also shaped by the experiences that happened beyond classrooms. May it be friendships, laughter, challenges and everyday moments on campus it taught him resilience, generosity and the value of meaningful connections. These experiences became lessons he would later carry into his career.

Today, Llanes cares for patients with HIV, tuberculosis, pneumonia and other infectious diseases. His work reminds him that medicine goes beyond treating illness. It means restoring hope and protecting the dignity of those under his care. As an associate professor, he also strives to pass on the excellence, integrity and spirit of service that his mentors at SPC instilled in him.

From a nursing student to a physician, educator and leader, Llanes has traveled far from the classrooms where his aspirations first grew. Still, the SPC quadrangle remains meaningful to him as a reminder of where his calling was nurtured and where many of the values guiding his work today were first formed.

For Llanes, San Pedro College is more than an alma mater. It is the place that strengthened his faith in service and gave him a foundation for the life he leads today. In every patient he cares for, student he teaches and the community he serves, the lessons of SPC continue to live on.

𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐢 𝐀𝐧𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐬, former Vice President in the Environment Program and General Treasurer of Volunteer Service Provider (VSP), began her journey in the organization as a student looking for a place to be involved. What started with a simple attendance gradually grew into years of participation, leadership, and service.

Her involvement grew with each year. By her third year at San Pedro College, she became the 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫 of the Board of Directors, eventually serving as 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 in her fourth year.

Among the experiences that remained close to her was VSP’s visit to 𝐒𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨 𝐏𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐧̃𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐚, 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, SPC’s adopted sitio in 2012.

During the implementation of 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐧-𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨-𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐃.𝐎.𝐌.𝐄.𝐒.), Bringas and her fellow volunteers travelled by boat, braved the rain, and walked through muddy terrain to reach the community. They worked with the residents and taught them how to make candles as a possible source of livelihood.

The trip was not simply about reaching a destination. For Bringas, it became an opportunity to see communities beyond the familiar surroundings of the campus and understand how student volunteers could extend their service to people in far-flung areas.

That experience became one of the many that shaped her perspective on service.

After graduating in 2015, Bringas continued along a path where care for others remained part of her work. She has now been serving as a 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭 under the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡’𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 (MTDP) in Kapalong, Davao del Norte for almost nine years.

Her journey shows how the experiences gained through VSP can continue beyond college. The communities may change, the responsibilities may grow, and the setting may be different, but the willingness to serve can remain.

This is where the lasting impact of VSP can be seen. It is in the communities reached by its projects, in the people who receive a helping hand, and in the volunteers who carry what they learned into the lives and communities they become part of.

A few years in an organization can leave a mark that lasts much longer. Through VSP, students are given the chance to step outside the classroom, meet people whose realities may be different from their own, and discover that even their time, skills, and simple acts of service can matter.

And Bringas’ journey is one example of where that experience can lead. What began as her involvement as a student became part of the way she continues to serve others today.

𝟕𝟎 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐒 | 𝐀 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞

An eye-opening experience—that is how Norlei Ann Bringas would describe her time in the Volunteer Service Program (VSP). It all began with joining a club due to requirements and eventually developed into an earnest passion for serving the community.

“What started as just an attendance … became a regular ... involvement in the club, until I wasn’t just a mere member anymore,” she shared.

Entering San Pedro College (SPC), Bringas only had one goal in mind—graduate on time. When she came across the VSP board by the exit, she decided to join—under the impression that she would only serve as a regular member. Little did she know that she would become not just an active member of the club but serve as one of its core members for years. By her third year, she had become the General Treasurer of the Board of Directors and eventually the Vice President of the Environment Program in her fourth year.

“One of the highlights was when we visited Sitio Pigasaan at Peñaplata, the adopted Sitio of SPC in Samal Island in 2012. That was my first exposure to what extent a school organization could do in a community,” she explained.
During Bringas’ second year in VSP, they went to one of the remote areas that SPC served to implement their project Developing Ocean's Man-made Eco-friendly Shelters (D.O.M.E.S.), and sought to teach the Sitio Pigasaan community how to make candles for a living. However, the journey wasn’t easy. While travelling by boat, they got caught in the rain and had to walk a few more kilometers through muddy terrain just to reach the area. The arduous journey and the joy brought by being able to help the community made her realize the importance of serving the community especially those in far flung areas.

“San Pedro College isn’t just a name of a school for me. It is where I was taught of the school’s core values,” she expressed.
Beyond her involvement in the community, Bringas’ adventure in SPC wasn’t easy, balancing academic and extracurriculars. She achieved her goal of graduating on time in 2015, with the encouragement and the help of her mentors and peers. Her journey taught her not just life lessons but instilled values that shaped her to be a compassionate healthcare professional.

For Norlei Ann Bringas, VSP showed her the reality of underserved communities—an experience that she continues to cherish and carry into her professional career. Today, she has served as a Medical Technologist under the Department of Health’s Medical Technologist Deployment Program (MTDP) for almost 9 years in Kapalong, Davao del Norte. Long after her graduation, she continues to serve with love and compassion, embodying the spirit of an SPCian.

Maybe of meeting new people, trying something different, making new memories, or simply finding a place where you can do something that matters.

𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 (𝐕𝐒𝐏) is more than just an organization. It is a place where experiences are shared, friendships are formed, and service becomes part of the memories you take with you.

Here, you get to step outside what you already know. You get to work with different people, take on things you have never tried before, and discover that sometimes, the most meaningful experiences are the ones you did not plan for.

You do not have to come in knowing exactly what you want to do. You just have to be willing to take that first step.

Because who knows? The simple decision to join might lead you to people you would not have met otherwise, experiences you would not have had, and memories you will look back on with a smile.

And perhaps, somewhere between the activities, the late conversations, the little victories, and the days spent serving others, you will find that you have become part of something bigger than yourself.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐍𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧̃𝐨, former President of the Volunteer Service Provider (VSP) is one of the many SPC alumni whose college years were shaped by service and leadership.

As VSP President under the mentorship of 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚, Nemeño took on the responsibility of leading an organization centered on service. The experience allowed her to grow as a leader while working with fellow student volunteers toward a shared purpose.

Her leadership also brought opportunities beyond the campus. She represented San Pedro College at the 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙨 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘼𝙙𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙨 (𝙋𝘼𝘾𝙎𝘼) 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and was part of VSP when the organization was recognized as one of the 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟭𝟬 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀.

For Nemeño, however, these accomplishments were more than titles and recognitions. They were experiences that taught her the value of teamwork, responsibility, and serving others.

Today, she continues that commitment to care in a different setting. Nemeño is currently working as a 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁 (𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗨) 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, where she cares for pediatric patients during their recovery.

The setting may have changed, but the heart of her work remains familiar: being there for others when they need care.

Her journey speaks to the lasting impact of VSP. The years spent volunteering, leading, and working alongside others may have been only one chapter of her college life, but the values formed through those experiences did not stay on campus. They followed her into her profession and continue to find meaning in the way she cares for others today.

That is perhaps one of the quietest measures of what VSP leaves behind. Its impact is not only seen in the projects completed or the recognitions received, but in the people who carry its spirit of service long after they leave.

For Maria Victoria Nemeño, VSP was part of where her journey began. Today, thousands of miles from SPC, she continues that journey in a different place, with different people, but with the same heart for service.

It was where I learned to lead, to serve, and to believe in what I could become.” These words capture the meaningful journey of an alumna whose years at San Pedro College (SPC) became an important foundation for both her personal and professional life.

Maria Victoria Nemeño’s college experience went beyond academics. While she gained the knowledge and skills needed for her nursing career inside the classroom, her involvement in student organizations gave her opportunities to grow in ways she never expected.

She became a member of the Cross Aiders of Christ (CAC), The Rock Student Publication, Volunteer Service Providers (VSP), and League of Clubs and Organizations (LCO). She grew in her faith, honed her leadership skills, and found a deeper passion for helping others through these organizations. More importantly, she has made friends and had experiences that are still meaningful to her after graduation.

One of the most memorable chapters in her SPC journey was being President of the Volunteer Service Providers (VSP) under the mentorship of Remark Mortalla. In her leadership position, she had responsibilities that challenged her to be more confident, responsible, and dedicated to serving.

Maria was also given the opportunity to represent San Pedro College at the Philippine Association of Campus Student Advisers (PACSA) National Convention.

“Representing San Pedro College at the PACSA National Convention was an incredible honor. It gave me the opportunity to showcase the values and excellence of our institution on a national stage,” she shared.

Another milestone she will always remember was when the Volunteer Service Providers was recognized as one of the Top 10 Outstanding Club Organizations in the Philippines.

“That recognition was not only a proud moment for our organization. It was a testament to the dedication, teamwork, and commitment we shared in serving our community,” she recalled.
The lessons she gained through these experiences eventually became part of the person and healthcare professional she is today.

San Pedro College provided her with a strong academic foundation and taught her the importance of integrity, excellence, and service. These values continue to guide her as she builds her career in nursing.

Maria Nemeño is presently employed as a Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) Nurse in Pediatrics in the Republic of Ireland. Her work caring for pediatric patients at a critical point in their recovery requires clinical competence, sound judgment, compassion, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
“I carry with me the knowledge, discipline, and values that San Pedro College instilled in me throughout my years as a student,” she expressed.

From student organizations and campus leadership to caring for pediatric patients thousands of miles away from home, her journey reflects the lasting influence of an SPC education.

Looking back, she remains grateful for the people who guided her, the opportunities that challenged her, and the experiences that helped shape her.

“I will always be proud to call San Pedro College my alma mater. It not only prepared me to succeed professionally, but also inspired me to become a lifelong learner, a compassionate nurse, and a person committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others.”

Maria Victoria Nemeño’s story is a reminder that the lessons learned at San Pedro College do not end with graduation. They continue to live on — in every act of service, every leadership opportunity, and every patient cared for with compassion.
