The Metsa Foundation, together with friends from Permakultura Dabaw and in partnership with Assumption College of Davao Hotel Management Department, conducted a sustainable containerized gardening initiative to NSTP students, highlighting the growing challenges of rising food costs, limited urban spaces, and the impacts of the climate crisis on food security.

The initiative emphasized the importance of equipping young people with practical, accessible, and safe food-production knowledge they can apply even in small urban spaces. It showed how containerized gardening is a viable way to grow food. Moreover, the activity sought to strengthen intergenerational advocacy for sustainable food production.

By empowering the youth to grow food using accessible resources and adapting to the realities of urban living and a changing climate, communities can build greater resilience, reduce vulnerability to rising food costs, and contribute to a more sustainable and food-secure future.

We thank Mr. Darwin Tinasas, Carl Talungon, Ma'am Bella, and Axel Chuang for helping us facilitate the said event. We also thank the HM Department and Ma'am Mylene Cano for initiating such an empowering activity for students and youth.

Women’s creativity in agroecology cannot be separated from sustainability and the thoughtful utilization of resources.

Women’s expression of sustainability can be seen not only through what they produce, but also how they transform, package, and bring their products to the market.

Extraction and consumption of resources are mitigated through creative and sustainable practices, as women partners make use of available, locally sourced, and often reusable or biodegradable materials to wrap and present their products.

These locally sourced materials are transformed into beautiful forms of packaging, demonstrating sustainability is intersectional to care for land, community and creativity. The carefully wrapped products are brought by women to our partner markets and consumer advocates. Through resource utilization, women show how care for the environment can be integrated into economic activity.

Metsa Foundation is grateful to partner advocates, friends and institutions such as Ateneo De Davao University Matina Campus, Assumption College of Davao, and the City Agriculture Office for the Rizal Park Market, as well as Three Yards, for providing spaces where women can introduce their products to wider audiences. These partnerships demonstrate that advocacy is inseparable from market access, economic opportunities, and access to safe food.

Imulayan Organic Resource Center, the farm component of Metsa Foundation, took part in the ongoing assessment conducted by the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS), together with the Department of Agriculture OAP XI, to regain its status as a certified organic farm and as part of the PGS Core Group.

Since 2014, Metsa Foundation has chaired PGS Davao, advancing the rights of small-scale farmers by promoting a more accessible and affordable organic certification system.

Through the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), Metsa Foundation continues to challenge the barriers created by costly third-party certification and to ensure organic certification remains within reach of small-scale farmers.

This milestone reaffirms Metsa Foundation’s enduring commitment to farmer empowerment, sustainability, and a fair and just food system.
