The Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP) has long been heralded as a sanctuary where diverse organisms thrive. Within its vast expanse, spanning more than 65,900 hectares across Mindanao, shelters hundreds of plant and animal species, including the countryโ€™s national birdโ€“the Philippine Eagle. Yet despite decades of scientific exploration, much of its biodiversity remains undocumented, living hidden within its dense forests.

In light of the recent rediscovery of Ophiorrhiza biflora after 122 years since it was last documentedโ€”raises an intriguing question: What other rare and elusive species are still waiting to be found within the enclaves of Mt. Apo?

These are some of the most fascinating species that continue to highlight the ecological significance of Mt. Apo Natural Park.

A rare endemic plant species of the rubiaceae family first discovered in Mt. Apo by an American botanist Edwin Bingham Copeland in October 1904. The plant is related to coffee, gardenia, mussaenda, and santan, and is characterized by their whorled leaves, interpetiolar stipules, sympetalous flowers (fused petals), and an inferior o***y. Its rediscovery marks the first photographic documentation of the species in the wild.

A rare, vulnerable epiphytic flowering plant native to the Philippines, named after Mt. Calelan in MANP. It was originally recorded in Mt. Apo in 1909 and was recently rediscovered in 2025. Belonging to the Gesneriaceae family, it is recognized by their soft, hairy stems and tabular flowers featuring warm orange to yellow hues. It is further distinguished with its linear-oblong calyx lobesโ€”the flowerโ€™s protective outer layerโ€”which are covered in long, shaggy hairs.

An elusive wild pig endemic to the Philippines, the Philippine Warty Pig is one of the four known species of the pig genus Sus. It is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with its population declining due to multiple threats like habitat loss. It is known for its black or dark brown fur and the distinct white tufts on the side of their lower jaw. The species thrive in dense tropical forests and has an omnivorous diet.

๐‘ช๐’๐’“๐’š๐’ƒ๐’‚๐’” ๐’‚๐’‘๐’๐’†๐’๐’”๐’Š๐’”
A newly described species of helmet orchids (Orchidaceae), endemic to Mindanao. The new species closely resembles C. viridisepalus in overall floral morphology. However, it is readily distinguished by its white floral background and a dorsal sepal being densely papillate on the abaxial surface. The species was formally described in Phytotaxa on July 7, 2026, in a paper โ€œCorybas apoensis (Orchidaceae), a new endemic species from Mt. Apo, Philippines.โ€ The discovery increased the number of documented Corybas species in the Philippines to 10, with only two species currently known to Mindanao, and it is assessed as Critically Endangered.

The rediscovery of species once thought lost and the continued presence of elusive wildlife underscore the immense ecological value of Mt. Apo Natural Park. These remarkable findings remind us that many of the mountainโ€™s biological treasures remain unexplored, making research and conservation efforts more important than ever.

Most plants have roots to drink water, leaves to catch sunlight, and stems to stand tall. The Rafflesia has none of these things. It has no roots, no stems, and no leaves. It is a parasite, which means it lives completely hidden inside another plant. It steals all its food and water from a specific wild jungle vine.

For months and months, you cannot see it at all. It is totally invisible. Then, suddenly, a big bud pushes out of the vine. It swells up like a giant basketball and bursts open into a massive flower. But you have to be quick to see it. This huge flower only stays alive for 5 to 7 days. After that, it collapses and turns into smelly black mush. People usually call it the โ€˜Corpse Flowerโ€™ because it normally smells like rotting meat to attract flies.

These flowers only grow in clean, deep rainforests. If you want to look for them, you have to hike up high mountains with a local guide. They grow on the cool, cloudy slopes of Mount Candalaga, Barangay Mapawa, and Barangay New Albay of Maragusan Davao de Oro. The special variety growing in Maragusan is famous for having no bad smell at all.

Scientists once found a massive family of 30 flowers blooming together in these mountains in Tarragona, Davao Oriental. Mount Apo is also a home to the largest type of Rafflesia in the Philippines, which can grow as wide as a large car tire.

Beneath a forest lies a hidden network of fungi called ๐™ข๐™ฎ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ง๐™ง๐™๐™ž๐™ฏ๐™–๐™š that connects the roots of different trees. Through this natural โ€œWood Wide Web,โ€ trees can share nutrients, send warning signals about insects or disease, and even help weaker trees to survive.

Scientists have discovered that forests are not just collections of individual treesโ€”they are connected communities that communicate and support one another through these underground networks.

When we think of weapon against climate change, we often picture vast inland rainforests. But right along our coastal fringes, dipping their roots directly into the saltwater, is an ecosystem that punches far above its weight class: mangroves.

Despite covering less than 1% of the world's tropical forest area, these salt-tolerant trees are absolute titans when it comes to safeguarding our planet. They act as a double-edged sword for environmental protection, serving as both elite climate warriors and physical shields for coastal communities like Davao City.

Their secret superpower? Blue Carbon. This refers to the carbon dioxide captured and stored by marine and coastal ecosystems. While terrestrial rainforests store most of their carbon in their leaves and wood, mangroves allocate a massive portion of their energy below ground.

Scientists have found that mangroves are among the most carbon-dense biomes on the planet, containing an average of 937 tons of carbon per hectare. Because they grow in waterlogged, oxygen-poor (anoxic) soils, decomposition is incredibly slow. This allows carbon to be trapped securely in the mud for centuries or even millennia rather than being released back into the atmosphere as greenhouse gases. When it comes to long-term carbon burial, a hectare of mangroves can outperform a terrestrial tropical rainforest by up to four times.

But mangroves donโ€™t just fight climate change on a global scale; they also protect us locally.

As a coastal region, the Philippines is highly vulnerable to tropical cyclones and rising sea levels. Here, the unique, tangled root networks of mangroves function as natural, living wave breakers. A comprehensive global synthesis by coastal researchers revealed that just one kilometer of healthy mangrove forest can reduce destructive surface wind waves by more than 75%.

Every time a patch of mangrove forest is cleared for coastal development or aquaculture, we don't just lose a few treesโ€”we trigger a localized environmental crisis. Disturbed mangrove soils release their massive centuries-old carbon reserves back into the atmosphere, transforming an essential carbon sink into a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, while leaving our land defenseless against the waves.

Protecting our coastlines doesn't always require building massive concrete seawalls. Sometimes, the most resilient shield we have is already growing out in the mud.

Beyond your academic achievements, you have also served as steadfast anchors of environmental stewardship within our community. Through your commitment to advocacy, volunteerism, and action for the environment, you have shown that young people can create meaningful change and inspire others to care for our planet.

No, you did not read that wrongโ€”yes YOU have the power to prevent flood. Short, intense rains from the ITCZ, monsoon surges, and localized storms can dump huge amounts of water fast. But weather isnโ€™t the whole story for the reason that clogged drains, degraded watersheds, and everyday garbage make floods occur even without a typhoon.

The truth is that many local floods occur even without a typhoon. When people skip proper waste disposal, everyday items like plastic bags, household trash, and construction debris choke our storm drains. This blocks the water and turns a normal, routine rain shower into a sudden street-wide disaster.

You don't need a massive things to protect your neighborhoodโ€”it all starts with a little daily accountability. By simply bagging your trash securely, stopping illegal dumping, using proper disposal points, and reporting clogged areas, you actively keep the water paths clear. While heavy engineering projects take years to build, collective discipline is a low-cost, high-impact way to keep our city safe and dry right now.
