Today, October 13, we observe the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), a reminder that reducing disaster risks begins with the choices we make and the actions we take every day.
This yearโs global theme, โResilience Starts at Home,โ highlights the importance of safer homes and prepared households in building disaster-resilient communities.
In the Philippines, the theme โPanatag na Tahanan at Paaralan,โ under the Panatag Pilipinas 3.0 campaign, emphasizes the vital role of families and schools in strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience.
Disaster preparedness begins with knowing the risks we face and taking action before disasters strike. The Philippine Red Cross encourages everyone to follow the ๐ฐ๐ฃ๐ of disaster preparedness:
๐ ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐งโ Know the hazards in your community, monitor official weather advisories and early warnings, and identify who may need assistance during an emergency.
๐ ๐ฃ๐๐๐ก โ Create a family emergency plan. Identify evacuation routes and meeting points, establish emergency contacts, and agree on what to do when separated.
๐ ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐๐ฃ๐๐ฅ๐ โ Keep an emergency go-bag ready, secure heavy furniture, check potential hazards in your home, and learn basic first aid and life-saving skills.
๐ ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ โ Conduct family emergency drills, participate in school earthquake and fire drills, practice evacuation procedures, and review your emergency plan regularly.
Resilience starts at home, but it grows through collective action. This International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, let us Predict, Plan, Prepare, and Practice to build safer homes, prepared schools, and resilient communities.
Ang ligtas na tahanan at paaralan ay simula ng isang matatag na komunidad. Maging handa, maging panatag!
The Philippine Red Cross remains committed to working with communities to strengthen disaster preparedness, reduce risks, and save lives.
๐ For emergencies, call 143.
