Women Studies and Resource Center A Davao-based non-governmental organization that aims to empower women in Mindanao through research, education and training, and advocacy work

The Women Studies and Resource Center (WSRC) was formed in 1982 when a collective of women engaged in social development work and social research met to discuss the situation of women in Mindanao at the height of the Marcos dictatorship. This women’s collective was convinced that the concerns and issues facing Mindanao women were given little attention and determined that a systematic collection of data on women’s conditions was needed to make Mindanao women’s invisibility and marginalization a thing of the past. Thus, a preliminary investigation was conducted by this women’s collective in partnership with the Mindanao and Sulu Secretariat for Social Action (MISSSA). The study was conducted from November 1982 until 1983 and its findings were later published as "Voices of Mindanao Women". The women’s collective that pioneered this systematic research on Mindanao women later evolved to be the Women Studies and Resource Center, Inc. and became officially registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in November 29, 1983. WSRC is a non-stock, non-profit, non-governmental institution that aims to empower the women of Mindanao through research, education and training, and advocacy work on concerns that are of critical importance to women.

Press Statement | PH Government’s Poverty Rate Does Not Reflect Filipinos’ Economic Realities – CWR

The Center for Women’s Resources (CWR)* cautioned the Marcos administration against presenting the reported decline in official poverty incidence as proof that Filipino families are now living better, saying that statistical improvement does not automatically translate into economic security, decent work, or a life of dignity.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that the proportion of Filipinos classified as poor fell from 15.5 percent in 2023 to 9.7 percent in 2025 – equivalent to a decline from approximately 17.5 million to 11.1 million people. The government has described the figures as significant progress in poverty reduction.

CWR, however, said that the government’s poverty figures represent a serious distortion of the actual extent and depth of poverty in the Philippines. By relying on a poverty threshold that does not adequately reflect the real cost of living or the income required for families to meet their basic needs and live with dignity, the government effectively narrows the definition of who is considered poor. This makes poverty appear smaller on paper than it is in people’s everyday lives.

Two weeks after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Sarangani, the work is far from over.

Relief operations continue. Media, responders, local governments, and community volunteers are still on the ground. In some landslide-hit areas, families are only now beginning to receive painful answers as recovery efforts continue.

But for many affected households, especially in remote and geographically isolated communities, daily survival remains difficult.

Food packs have been stretched. Water remains a concern. Families are still staying in temporary shelters, sharing what little they have, and trying to rebuild while facing uncertainty each day.
