OPERATION TABANG: KIWANIS RESPONDS TO EARTHQUAKE AND FLOOD VICTIMS IN GENERAL SANTOS CITY
On June 8, 2026, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the city of General Santos, leaving many families struggling to recover from the devastation. Just a month later, while our community was still in the process of rebuilding, another calamity struck.
On July 23, 2026, General Santos City experienced heavy downpours and flash floods brought about by the combined effects of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and the intensification of Tropical Storm Kiyapo. The flooding displaced hundreds of families, with some homes severely damaged or completely washed away.
Approximately 1,300 individuals, including children and adults, were evacuated to the Calumpang Gym, where they temporarily sought shelter. Many families are currently sleeping in tents inside the evacuation center, uncertain of when they will be able to return to their homes.
In response to this urgent need, Kiwanis Club of Magandang Gensan and Kiwanis Club of Gensan Home of the Champions , with the financial assistance and support of the Kiwanis Southern Philippine District we immediately launched Operation Tabang for Earthquake and Flood Victims.
Through this quick-response humanitarian effort, we conducted a feeding activity and distributed essential relief items, including:
π Pack meals of garlic chicken and rice
π₯£ Arroz caldo
π Bread
π§ Bottled water
π Used clothing
π Medicines for children
𧴠Vitamins and other basic health necessities.
Because of the generosity and support extended through our District, we were able to provide meals and assistance to all individuals affected by the earthquake and flooding in the evacuation place.
We are deeply grateful to the Kiwanis Japan District for its generous contribution coursed through the Kiwanis Southern Philippine District. Your support has made it possible for us to respond quickly and bring comfort and hope to families who are facing extremely difficult circumstances.
Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to our District Governor Danilo Fernandez for trusting our clubs and entrusting us with the budget and resources needed to carry out this humanitarian response.
This is what Kiwanis is all aboutβServing the Children of the World and standing with communities when they need help the most.
To every Kiwanian, donor, volunteer, and supporter who made Operation Tabang possible, maraming salamat. Your kindness has given food to hungry families, comfort to displaced children, and hope to people who have lost so much.
Together, we serve. Together, we care. Together, we help our community rise again.
