Dieses Foto soll als Beweis stehen, dass die Wege zu den Pflanzstätten nicht immer einfach sind. Wer, wie Kaloy, eine halbe Stunde über dieses Wurzeln gestolpert ist, muss bei der Ankuft erst einmal eine kurze Pause einlegen. Der einzige Vorteil ist, dass die Hitze etwas gemildert ist, die auf offenen Flächen wie ein Grill wirkt, allerdings mit der Glut von oben. Wenn die Temperaturen zwischen 11 Uhr und 14 Uhr ihren Höhepunkt erreichen, stellen wir die Pflanzaktivitäten ein. Trotzdem schaffen wir es in dieser regenarmen und von der Sonne aufgeheizten Zeit monatlich 80.000 Mangroven zu pflanzen, meist in Baganga.

This photo serves as proof that the paths to the planting sites aren’t always easy. Anyone who, like Kaloy, has spent half an hour stumbling over these roots needs to take a short break upon arrival. The only advantage is that the heat is somewhat milder here; in open areas, the sun feels like a grill, but with the heat coming from above. When temperatures peak between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., we stop planting. Nevertheless, during this dry season when the sun beats down, we manage to plant 80,000 mangroves every month, mostly in Baganga.

Our planting activities in Guang guang, Mati, Davao Oriental are successful because we’re planting the right mangroves in sediments suitable for their species. Nevertheless, the seedlings don’t have an easy time thriving in this limestone desert, which lies over the sediment like a concrete slab. The mangrove in the photo was planted by our forester Bryan 18 months ago; although it lags its counterparts in growth, it is very robust and healthy. So: It’s possible. Every mangrove contributes to more life. We need more nature for more life.

It’s truly amazing to see from the air what we get to experience every day: the mangroves we’ve planted are growing remarkably well. The photos taken by our drones—which are used to monitor and document the plantings—show that the mangroves are extending their light-green leaves above the water’s surface. This area in Baganga is particularly significant because all the old Pagatpat mangroves here have died. So there are no more seeds. We’ve already carried out extensive reforestation efforts, but we’re continuing our work because Baganga is still short about 7.5 million mangroves. We do everything for transparency. We have maps, drone flights, pictures, videos, etc., but nothing is better than an inspection with our own eyes. Succes is not like lotto, succus is to be always hand on. We love what we do and are proud to help the nature and give the benefits to our planters, because the hardest part is to nurse mangrove and plant them. Thank you, planters. Do you like to help us? Every year, we celebrate International Mangrove Day. It is observed on July 26, a date designated by UNESCO in 2015. We are grateful every day for the opportunity to help reforest mangrove stands in the Philippines. We are currently planting about 80,000 mangroves per month.

Today our foresters (Bryan in the picture, and Kaloy as photographer) have been in San Isidro, Davao Oriental, where we planted mangroves six months ago. During the visual inspection and after several drone flight we can say: Almost 90 % survival rate. Congratulations to the planting team of Levy. More good news? We start soon with the next planting activities beside. Note: More mangrove, more income for fisher families, more protection from landslides, more carbon storage und more steps in future to have a healthy planet for the next generations. Fortunately, it rains from time to time. However, it’s not enough to keep the soil in our plant bags moist. That’s why watering almost every day is part of our work at the nursery. We’re currently working hard to fill the nurseries to the brim, because the mangroves are heavy with seeds, and we need to make sure we can plant at least 80,000 mangroves every month. It’s a wonderful challenge.
