The City Agriculturist's Office-Calinan District and the 4-H Club Federation of Calinan concluded the 3-day 4-H Calinan Youth Camp on November 15-17, 2024, at Wangan National High School in Brgy. Wangan, Calinan District, Davao City. The transformative event, themed "4-H a seed of change: empowering youth to explore positive change in the community through agri-fishery involvement," aims to empower young minds, cultivate leadership skills, and promote agriculture among youth.
Over 255 enthusiastic participants from various barangays in Calinan District, including Wangan, Tamayong, Biao Joaquin, Talomo River, Lamanan, Dominga, and Inayangan, as well as Wangan National High School students, gathered to participate in a variety of activities.
The opening ceremony featured the entrance of colors, exciting performances, and insightful messages from esteemed guests. Ms. Agnes S. Barte, Acting Municipal Agricultural Officer of Calinan District, acknowledged the attendees. Hon. Teofilo Pam-ot, Barangay. Kagawad from Wangan extended a warm welcome to the participants, and Mr. Jopet Baluran gave an engaging message. Ms. Gracel F. Paรฑa, teacher from Wangan NHS, was grateful that the school was able to host and students were able to participate in the 4-H Calinan Youth Camp. Mr. James Arly A. Danac, Division Chief of Institutional Development Services Division, delivered an inspiring message, while Mr. Paul Jhone Dominic Ebon, past president of the 4-H Club Federation of Davao Region, gave a thought-provoking keynote speech. A citizenship ceremony was also held, in which 4-H members who reached the voting age were made aware of their rights and obligations as citizens. During the youth camp, a candlelighting ceremony took place to symbolize the hopes and aspirations of the youth for a better future.
The subsequent days were filled with a variety of engaging activities, including talks on poultry production, City Social Welfare and Development programs, DSWD initiatives, and community service activities. The camp also featured a series of competitions, including cooking contest, quizbee, trashformation, song writing and singing competition, Agritale video-making contest, Mr. & Ms. 4-H, basketball league, and volleyball league. These competitions not only showcased the participants' skills and talents but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition.
The camp concluded with a closing ceremony, in which participants received certificates and awards for their outstanding performance in the various competitions. Dr. Antonio R. Obsioma, OIC-City Agriculturist, delivered an inspiring speech about the value of agriculture and self development. He encouraged the youth to explore their full potential and contribute to the betterment of their communities. Ms. Agnes S. Barte gave her closing remarks, thanking all of the organizers and participants.
Thus, the 3-day 4-H Calinan Youth Camp was a spectacular success, making a lasting impression on the lives of the participants. It offered a platform for community involvement, skill development, and personal growth. Through cultivating a passion for agriculture, encouraging environmental preservation, and developing leadership skills, the camp has equipped the youth to become responsible and effective citizens of their community.
