Did You Know the dugong (Dugong dugon) is the only strictly marine, herbivorous mammal. While manatees are also herbivores, they often inhabit freshwater and estuarine environments, whereas the dugong is restricted to saltwater.
Key Facts About the Dugong
Diet: They are dedicated grazers that consume large quantities of seagrass (up to 40 kg or ~88 lbs per day).
Habitat: Found in shallow coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Appearance: Often called "sea cows," they have a dolphin-like, fluked tail (unlike the paddle tail of a manatee).
Conservation Status: They are considered endangered due to habitat loss, plastic ingestion, getting caught in fishing gear and in cases poaching. Unfortunately the Philippines had 4 Dugongs die in the last 2 weeks throughout the country. That is Sad because the Dugong is very slow to Mature and even slower in reproduction.
