BIODIVERSITY SPOTLIGHT: Spotted Forest Dragon

We recently spotted a Spotted Forest Dragon (Gonocephalus sp.) in a forested area near one of our reforestation sites in Sitio Nam-Nam, Marilog District, Davao City.

Seeing wildlife like this is a reminder of why existing forest patches matter. Mature and remnant native trees already provide food, shelter, and habitat for many species. However, these areas continue to face pressure from agricultural expansion and invasive plants such as Buyo-Buyo (Piper aduncum).

Reforestation is not only about planting more trees. It also means protecting existing forests, choosing native species, caring for young trees, and managing invasive plants.

Earth is not just for humans 🙏💚

Did you know that a bird can help “farm” an entire forest?

Deep in the rainforests of Negros and Panay lives a bird known as the Dulungan, or Rufous-headed hornbill—one of 10 hornbill species found only in the Philippines.

The species is known as the “farmer of the forest” because it helps spread seeds. As frugivores, hornbills primarily eat fruits, swallowing seeds along with their food and later dispersing them as they move from one part of the forest to another.

PLANTING IS ONLY THE BEGINNING
These photos show two native Philippine trees: Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) and White Lauan (Shorea contorta).
They were planted in 2024 at our project site in Sitio Nam-Nam, Marilog District, Davao City. Since then, they have continued to grow, with one now taller than a person.

Putting seedlings in the ground is just the first step. Young trees need regular monitoring, maintenance, and protection to help them survive and grow.

At EGIP Foundation, we work with communities in and around the project area to care for these trees over the long term. Reforestation takes time, consistent care, and teamwork.

WHY PLANT NATIVE TREES?
Native trees are well suited to the Philippines’ climate and soil. They also provide food, shelter, and nesting areas for local birds, insects, and other wildlife.

The Philippines is home to many tree species found nowhere else in the world. Planting native species helps protect this biodiversity and supports a healthier local ecosystem.

Some introduced trees may grow faster, but fast growth does not always mean they offer the same benefits to local wildlife. Choosing the right native species is an important part of responsible reforestation.

A seedling may start small, but with proper care and community support, it can grow into a healthy part of the forest.

Celebrating all Eco-Warriors

THE MAN WHO SAVED REEFS

He grew up beside the sea. Decades later, he helped change how the Philippines protects it.

Angel Alcala was raised in the coastal village of Caliling in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, where his fascination with marine life began.

He studied Biology at Silliman University, graduating magna cm laude in 1951. He later earned his master’s and PhD in Biological Sciences from Stanford University before returning to the Philippines to teach and conduct research.

In 1974, Alcala helped establish the pioneering marine sanctuary at Sumilon Island. His research showed that protecting part of a reef could allow marine life to recover while supporting fishing in surrounding waters.

But Sumilon also taught him something important: conservation works better when local communities are involved.

That lesson shaped the celebrated Apo Island model, where scientists worked alongside fishing families to protect and manage their reef.

His work eventually helped inspire more than 1,000 marine no-take areas across the Philippines.

From a boy fascinated by the sea to a National Scientist, Angel Alcala showed how Filipino science could protect both nature and livelihoods. 🇵
