RCDD BUILDS KITCHEN FOR HEALTHY SCHOOL LUNCHES. The Rotary Club of Downtown Davao is adopting Ciriaco Mariano Elementary School (CMES) in Shrine Hills, Matina, Davao City so its learners from Kinder to Grade 6 will be fed healthy hot meals everyday.

RCDD will transform one room into a functional and fully-equipped school kitchen that can prepare and cook nutritious meals for 117 learners for an entire school year. This is part of the club’s commitment to be DepEd Davao City’s civil society partner in the pilot implementation of its universal school-based feeding program.

The learners of CMES come from disadvantaged families who are informal settlers and scavengers near the city’s landfill. They rank high in schools with incidence of malnutrition in the first congressional district.

Today, August 19, 2026, RCDD officers led by Past District Governor Twinkle Gamboa conducted an ocular inspection of the proposed kitchen. She was joined by Vice-President Patmei Bello Ruivivar and New Generation and Youth Service Chair Mariane Gamboa-Mosquisa. Fellow RCDD member, Cyril Duran, who is an engineer and a contractor, will serve as project manager of the school kitchen construction. He will be assisted by Architect Jam. They hope to finish the project by next month in time for Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month.

The school principal, Dr. Joan Asoy, is grateful to RCDD for adopting CMES because the school does not have enough budget to fully implement the universal feeding program since it is one of the smaller schools with a relatively few student population. Current DepEd budget for school-based feeding is P25 per learner per day.

As for operating expenses, DepEd uses a modified formula (the Boncodin formula) that combines a base fixed amount with variable costs based on school population and facilities. An elementary school gets a fixed rate of P50,000 a year plus P250 per learner plus P3,750 per classroom plus P5,000 per teacher.

That is why DepEd has an Adopt-A-School Program to invite private sector partners to help supplement its limited budget.

By supporting DepEd, RCDD is addressing all of Rotary’s Areas of Focus with just one project β€” maternal and child health, disease prevention and treatment, basic education and literacy, WASH, care for the environment, economic and community development, and peace.

RCDD CHAMPIONS INCLUSIVE EDUCATION. The Rotary Club of Downtown Davao (RCDD) has been championing for several years now. As a partner in service of the DepEd Davao City, RCDD’s signature projects are focused on the city’s learners with disabilities (LWD).

In preparation for September, Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month, RCDD officers met today, August 18, 2026, with Dr. John Galan, DepEd Public Schools District Supervisor and Division SPED Coordinator; Davao City Special School Principal Maria Ligaya Romero; and Assistant Principal Sanny PeΓ±a, to discuss the activities and projects they will collaborate on this Rotary year.

Among the activities lined up are hearing screening and assessment for learners; voice hygiene and dentures for teachers; search for the most outstanding special education teacher; and the club’s signature project, dedicated to LWDs in basic education in Davao City.

In the past years, RCDD has donated more than 70 pediatric wheelchairs to LWDs from different elementary schools in the city.

RCDD CELEBRATES KADAYAWAN 2026. August is harvest season and Kadayawan Festival in Davao City. In Rotary, it is Membership Month. The Rotary Club of Downtown Davao celebrates both by inducting our new member, Harold Quibete, and renewing the honorary membership of Oscar Casaysay. Both of them play key roles in Kadayawan 2026. Oca is the head of the Davao City Office for Culture, Arts, and Heritage and is part of the Festival Executive Committee while Harold is the event organizer of this year’s Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan and Pamulak Kadayawan.

Downtowners were out and about wearing our shirts declaring: β€œWe are One, KadayawOne!” Connecting with nature and culture while celebrating our community’s diversity is building peace β€” a cornerstone of the mission of Rotary International.

ICYMI: The Rotary Club Downtown Davao (RCDD), together with Rotary District 3860, Areas 2A, 2B, and 2C, had the privilege of celebrating the Rotary New Year last July 1 with the Ciriaco Mariano Elementary School family.

As part of the celebration, we shared a Healthy Feeding Program, hygiene kits, and educational books with our young learners.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Joan A. Asoy, School Principal, and the teachers, parents, and school personnel for warmly welcoming us. Your partnership reminds us that when we come together in service, we can create healthier, brighter, and more hopeful futures for our children.
