On August 19, 2026, Mr. Travis Sullivan, Boeing's President for Southeast Asia, met with the Philippine Eagle Foundation for an alignment meeting for follow-through programs.

Travis Sullivan led the meeting together with Capt. Tristan Simeon, Flight Operations Representative, and Landry Subianto, Head of Government Relations for Southeast Asia.

Representing PEF is Executive Director Dennis I. Salvador, joined by PEF Board of Trustees Chairperson Felicia H. Atienza and PEF Trustee and Philippine Airlines' Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Atty. Carlos Fernandez.

Boeing has long stood as a valued partner and sponsor of the Philippine Eagle Foundation, and proud adopter of two majestic Philippine Eagles, Makisig and Hiraya.

This meeting marks a renewed commitment to conservation as Boeing's leadership in the region continues to soar alongside PEF's mission. We look forward to continuing this journey with Boeing, for the eagles and the forests they call home.

Many of you have been following Lakpueโ€™s journey since our last update, when we shared the heartening sight of him drinking from the Marabong River and actively hunting rat snakes, lizards, and palm civets in the wild.

We know how deeply many of you have come to care for this male Philippine Eagle. So we want to share an important development from the field.

On August 16, Lakpue was rescued along the Marabong River in Burauen, Leyte, following an encounter with a domestic dog that resulted in the complete loss of one of his talons.

PEF Veterinarian Danielle Pasion and Senior Animal Keeper Dominic Tadena provided immediate first aid and stabilized Lakpue.

On August 18, he was transported from Burauen to Doc Bayaniโ€™s Animal Wellness Clinic in Davao City, where he is now undergoing a thorough medical examination, treatment, and mandatory disease screening under the care of a veterinary team led by Dr. Sheen Gadong.

Following his medical assessment and clearance, Lakpue will be transferred to the Philippine Eagle Center for continued care and rehabilitation.

The loss of a talon is a serious injury for a Philippine Eagle. Talons are essential tools for grasping and subduing prey, and this injury may affect an eagleโ€™s ability to hunt and survive independently in the wild.

But this is not a final verdict on Lakpueโ€™s future.

His rescue does not automatically close the door to the wild.

Our veterinary and rehabilitation teams will give Lakpue the opportunity to recover and will closely assess his agility, balance, strength, coordination, andโ€”most importantlyโ€”his ability to hunt and effectively capture and subdue prey despite the permanent loss of his talon.

The fact that Lakpue had been observed actively hunting rat snakes, lizards, and palm civets in the wild is an encouraging part of his story. His rehabilitation will help us determine whether he can continue to perform these critical behaviors effectively despite his injury.

Ultimately, his ability to survive independentlyโ€”not flight aloneโ€”will guide the decision on whether he can return to the wild.

For everyone who has been following Lakpue, we know this is difficult news after seeing him so active along the river.

But this is not the end of Lakpueโ€™s story.

For now, Lakpue is receiving the care he needs, surrounded by people committed to giving him every possible opportunity to recover.

Please continue to root for Lakpue and join us in hoping for the best as he begins this next chapter of his journey. ๐Ÿฆ…โค๏ธ

Weโ€™ll keep you updated as his rehabilitation progresses.

For the first time, PEF Biologist Tristan Senarillos and his team documented the complete nesting cycle of a South Philippine Hawk-Eagle in Leyte: from nest-building to the chickโ€™s first flight.

This IUCN Globally โ€œEndangeredโ€ Philippine endemic is one of the countryโ€™s rarest and least-studied raptors. Data from this nest can help scientists better understand its breeding biology, identify critical nesting habitats, improve population monitoring, and guide stronger protection of breeding pairs and their forests.

What we learn from this one nest could help shape the conservation of the species in the wild.

We gratefully acknowledge DENR Region 8 and the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park Protected Area Management Office (MVNP PAMO) for the research permit and field assistance, and the Mohamed bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund and Raptor Aid for funding support.

One eagle. Two Indigenous communities. One promise: donโ€™t let the story end here. ๐Ÿฆ…

The ancestral domain of the Daraghuyan Tribal Council in Dalwangan, Bukidnon holds something extraordinaryโ€”an ancient Philippine Eagle nesting site, still home to a resident eagle pair.

Then came Sawaga-Dalwangan.

Her rescue, and her heartbreaking death soon after, made one thing painfully clear: protecting the next eagle cannot begin only when something goes wrong.

So on August 10โ€“11, the Daraghuyan Community traveled to Davao for a learning exchange hosted by PEF, together with Kitanglad NGO, the assisting NGO of the Daraghuyan Community, which also joined the benchmarking activity.

At the Philippine Eagle Center, they learned how research, monitoring, rescue, and conservation breeding help keep eagles alive.

Then they met the Obu Manuvu Community of Tambobongโ€”another Indigenous community protecting Philippine Eagles and their forests.

Two communities. Different ancestral domains. The same responsibility.

They shared stories, culture, experience, and lessons on how conservation can be led by the people who live closest to the eagles.

Because the real goal is bigger than protecting one bird.

It is making sure the resident pair in Dalwanganโ€”and the young eagles they may raiseโ€”have a safer future.

That is intergenerational conservation:

protect the pair โ†’ protect the nest โ†’ protect the next generation.

Our heartfelt thanks to Carl E. Balita, adopter of Philippine Eagle โ€œCarlito,โ€ whose support helped make this benchmarking activity possible.

Support PEFโ€™s culture-based conservation work and help us sustain our partnership with the Daraghuyan Tribal Council. Together, we can strengthen community-led protection of Philippine Eagles, their forests, and the generations that will inherit them.

Davao ran for the eagle. ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ’š

What better way to kick off Kadayawan than to run for something worth protecting?

On August 9, runners gathered at Azuela Cove for Globe Telecomโ€™s 5G Hypermove Davao Legโ€”moving together not just for fitness, but for a future where the Philippine Eagle still soars over Davaoโ€™s forests.

And every step became a little more meaningful.

PEF is grateful to Globe Telecom for making the Philippine Eagle and Philippine biodiversity the beneficiary of the run, and for its โ‚ฑ100,000 donation to help protect our national bird and the forest home it depends on.

To everyone who ran, walked, cheered, and showed up: you moved for more than a cause. You moved for a species. ๐Ÿฆ…

Thank you for helping keep the Philippine Eagle flying.

Many of you followed Sawaga-Dalwanganโ€™s journeyโ€”from the day she was rescued, through her treatment and rehabilitation, until her sudden death.

We now have the results of the examination of tissue samples taken from her liver, heart, and spleen. These results help us better understand what happened to her.

The examination found signs of a serious bacterial infection that had spread through her body. Bacteria were seen in her liver, and there was inflammation and damage in several organs, including her liver and heart.

Together with the findings from her medical examination and necropsy, the results show that a

The changes seen in her tissues suggest that the infection may have been developing over a subacute to chronic period, potentially beginning weeks before her death.

When Sawaga-Dalwangan was rescued on July 3, she was already in a compromised condition. She was dehydrated, lethargic, and heavily soiled, and had external wounds, maggot infestation, and injuries associated with airgun pellets. These conditions may have increased her susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection.

During treatment, Sawaga-Dalwangan showed encouraging signs of recovery. Her wounds began to heal, she became better hydrated, her appetite improved, and she showed normal behaviors again.

However, the later examination showed that a serious infection was still present in her body.

On July 18, she suddenly developed generalized seizures. Despite immediate emergency care, she died shortly afterward.

We are sharing these findings because Sawaga-Dalwanganโ€™s story deserves an ending based on scientific evidence, and because everyone who followed her journey and hoped for her recovery deserves to understand what happened.
