Initiatives for International Dialogue

Initiatives for International Dialogue IID is an advocacy and solidarity organization promoting south-south solidarity and internationalism. Engagement is necessary to assert this notion.

Thematic priorities: conflict prevention and peacebuilding, democratization and right to self-determination. Key institutional approaches:

Partnership building and engagements among civil society, governments and multilateral institutions. There is need for complementation and for partnership among the main actors in resolving and preventing conflicts. Assertion of Civil Society Organizations' ro

les. The primacy role of civil society in advocating this partnership and engagement framework and approach must be reiterated, especially so since civil society has been marginalized in these processes. Active participation of peoples. Almost always civilian perspectives do not find their way to the “table”. It is thus imperative that their voices are asserted directly or through their champions and partners in civil society. South-South Solidarity. The assertion of a local struggle takes on a broader and stronger dimension if supported and resonated with similar struggles of other peoples. There is strength in breadth and numbers specially from people or sectors that mirror one’s own struggle. Respect for Human Rights. Democratization, the right to self-determination and conflict prevention and peacebuilding are themes that complement and are inter-related. They can be pursued in a manner that strengthens the promotion, protection and fulfillment of human rights. IID also recognizes the gender dimension of its work. It intends to pursue a rights-based approach to gender. IID will promote equality by identifying gender issues in specific contexts, looking in particular at the nexus of gender and culture. Women’s empowerment will be promoted using the principles of conscientization, participation and control as entry points.

Jakarta, Indonesia | Strengthening friendships, sustaining peace 🤝

We are honored to share this meaningful engagement between Roberto Sarmento de Oliveira Soares and Gus Miclat at the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Jakarta.

Rooted in long-standing relationships and shared values, the meeting reaffirmed the vital role of civil society and grassroots networks in advancing dialogue, human fraternity, and reconciliation across the region. It is through these spaces of trust and solidarity that meaningful and lasting peace continues to take shape.

IID Welcomes OPAPRU Leadership Transition

The Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) welcomes the leadership transition in OPAPRU at a critical moment for peacebuilding in the Philippines.

This is an opportunity not only to sustain gains—but to deepen inclusive, participatory, and people-centered peace processes.

We underscore:

• Ensure the full and timely implementation of the CAB in the Bangsamoro
• Strengthen engagement of marginalized sectors
• Move from consultation toward co-decision-making
• Sustain continuous dialogue across all peace tables
• Avoid overreliance on hard security approaches
• Protect civic space and strengthen accountability

Peace must be built with people—not just for them.

HAPPENING NOW: Gus Miclat joins fellow representatives and peace advocates in a powerful exchange of stories and solidarity—grounded in a shared commitment to justice across contexts.

From Gaza to the Bangsamoro, to the Rohingya communities, voices from the ground are shared as they are—stories told with honesty, dignity, and urgency. Gus reflects on the success stories of solidarity built through people-to-people engagement, reminding us that meaningful change is rooted in connection, empathy, and sustained collaboration.

Together with other representatives—many sharing lived realities from Gaza—this space centers truth-telling as a form of resistance and solidarity.

But beyond stories, there is a clear call: we seek action. We call for genuine accompaniment, meaningful partnership, and sustained commitment from all who stand for justice.

The call for BDS—Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions—is echoed once more as part of the collective demand for accountability and concrete change.

This is South-to-South solidarity in action—where communities learn from one another, stand with one another, and fight alongside one another.

In celebration of the 12th Anniversary of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), a multi-sectoral group of leaders from civil society, academe, labor, and business issues this statement to sound the alarm on the current state of the peace process.

Twelve years on, the challenge is no longer agreement—but delivery.

As the process faces growing risks of drift, we call for renewed leadership, sustained engagement, and decisive action to safeguard its gains and support its credible completion.

Today, on International Women’s Day, Initiatives for International Dialogue proudly celebrates the strength, courage, and leadership of women everywhere.

Across communities, movements, and generations, women continue to shape pathways toward justice, dialogue, and lasting peace. From grassroots peacebuilders to community leaders, advocates, and everyday changemakers, women remind us that real transformation happens when women rise and lead.

Yet even today, many women continue to face barriers that diminish their voices and leadership—whether through dismissive attitudes, harmful stereotypes, or narratives that question women’s place in public life. These realities only reaffirm the importance of creating spaces where women’s perspectives are respected, their leadership recognized, and their contributions valued.

At IID, we honor the spirit of Women for Women—a powerful reminder that when women uplift one another, they also uplift communities, bridge divides, and open pathways toward justice, dignity, and peace for all. The leadership and solidarity of women do not only transform women’s lives; they create more inclusive and compassionate societies for everyone.

Today and every day, we celebrate the women who lead with courage, nurture hope, build bridges across communities, and continue to shape a more just and peaceful world.

To all women: your leadership matters, your voices inspire, and your work helps build a future where peace and dignity are shared by all.

Happy International Women’s Day!

In solidarity,
Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID)

Through the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), the Philippine Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Consultation in the Bangsamoro and Mindanao was recently conducted as part of the YPS Consultations for Big Impact initiative, in partnership with Interpeace and the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (CSPPS).

Over the course of two months, from January to February 2026, the consultations engaged various young women and men through multiple FGDs. These spaces brought together youth from a private university, a state university, community-based youth groups, and experienced youth peace practitioners.

The consultations explored a key question: How can youth participation in the Bangsamoro move from presence to genuine influence?

Participants shared their experiences contributing to peacebuilding through community dialogue, mediation support, digital advocacy, normalization initiatives, and grassroots monitoring. The discussions also reflected on how existing peace and governance mechanisms—both formal and informal—shape youth engagement in the region.

These consultations form part of a broader effort under the YPS Consultations for Big Impact initiative, which aims to generate youth-led insights and policy recommendations that inform national decision-making and contribute to the Second Independent Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security.

The full findings and insights from the consultations will be released soon.

IID extends its gratitude to the young leaders, students, and peace practitioners who generously shared their time and perspectives. We also thank the institutional and community gatekeepers, coordinators, partner networks, and friends and collaborators who helped make these consultations safe, possible, and meaningful—from opening spaces for dialogue to supporting the design and priorities of the discussions. Your support made it possible to reach diverse youth voices across Bangsamoro and Mindanao.

Healing the Past, Building the Future: Transitional Justice and Reconciliation in BARMM

When community voices shape policy.

Through sustained dialogue and engagement facilitated by IID and its consortium partners, community proposals and civil society advocacies contributed to policy processes and mechanisms at the local, regional, and national levels. These include engagements related to the Marawi Compensation Act, the Bangsamoro Indigenous Peoples Act, and Women, Peace and Security.

This video highlights how partnerships between communities, civil society, and government helped translate lived experiences into concrete policy gains toward justice and lasting peace in BARMM.

The INCLUDE BARMM Project was implemented by IID, in partnership with BALAOD Mindanaw, Kalimudan, Tlwoi Teduray Lambangian, and United Youth for Peace and Development (UNYPAD), with support from the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund.
