Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development

This International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us that our future depends on restoring ecosystems and halting nature loss. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals must go hand in hand—because when biodiversity suffers, humanity does too.

We are showcasing Philippine endemic flora and fauna—wildlife we've had the privilege to photograph in the field. These species bring life to the ecosystems we rely on every day. Being stewards of nature is not just about protecting wildlife—it’s about protecting ourselves and our future.

Even in the darkest skies, a mother never lets go.

Like the Golden-crowned flying fox, who carries her pup for six whole months—day and night, in flight and at rest—she bears the weight of love with quiet strength.
Her baby clings not out of fear, but out of absolute trust, knowing that no matter how long or hard the journey, Mama will never let go.
This is the power of a mother’s love: unshakable, unconditional, and endlessly brave.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who carry us through life with hearts as wide as wings.

On this World Conservation Day, we are reminded of the heartbreaking reality faced by countless bird species around the world. Stripped from their homes, separated from their families, and trapped in cages, these beautiful creatures fall victim to the relentless illegal wildlife trade. Their songs, once a symbol of freedom and nature’s harmony, are silenced as they are trafficked and sold.

Every bird stolen from the wild is a loss—not just to nature, but to humanity’s soul. Forests grow quieter, ecosystems falter, and the delicate balance of life unravels. If we don’t act, the vibrant colors and melodies of the skies will fade into memory.

Let today be a somber reminder of what we stand to lose and a call to action to fight for the freedom and survival of these innocent lives. We can’t bring back the ones we’ve lost, but we can still save those who remain.

Imagine spending the rest of your life like this caged southern mother and her chick, both Southern Rufous Hornbills, a species found only in the Philippines.

These beautiful birds, prized for their striking bills and vibrant colors, are stolen from their homes in the forest year after year. Thousands are poached, especially during nesting season, when they are most vulnerable. Hornbills seal themselves inside tree cavities to protect their young, but this natural instinct tragically makes them easy targets for poachers.

Once caught, these majestic creatures are condemned to a life of confinement, trapped in cages far too small for their needs. They cannot spread their wings or live the way nature intended, enduring a life of immense stress and suffering. Just look at this mother and her chick, crammed into a cage that offers them no escape, no freedom.

We cannot let this cruelty continue. We must take action to protect these helpless animals. Please, do not support the illegal hornbill trade. There are many ways we can all help - whether through education, raising awareness, or reporting illegal activities.

This Mother’s Day, as we honor the strength of mothers, let’s not forget these vulnerable families and the protection they deserve in their natural homes."

Migratory species of the day: The Ruddy Turnstone, hailing from the high Arctic tundra, is like the Sherlock Holmes of the bird world! These small, stocky shorebirds are famous for their clever habit of flipping over stones, shells, and seaweed with their beaks to find hidden prey—hence the name 'Turnstone.'

Their striking black, white, and orange feathers make them easy to spot, but it’s their detective skills that make them truly fascinating.

Have you ever heard of the Common Greenshank? This sleek, long-legged bird is like the marathon runner of the wetlands! Known for their striking greenish legs, these birds are expert migrators, traveling thousands of kilometers between Europe and Asia.

But here’s the coolest part—when they hunt, they dash through the water, using their long legs to stir up small fish and insects. It's like watching a nature-made speed chase!

Spot this species Guang-guang Mangrove Park and Nursery in Mati City.

Mati's migratory species of the hour:

The Pacific Golden Plover is a master of disguise! These small shorebirds have a golden-brown plumage that blends perfectly with sandy beaches and grassy landscapes.

Their camouflage helps them stay hidden from predators as they forage for insects and small marine creatures. Next time you're on a coastal/mudflat walk, keep your eyes peeled— you might just spot one blending right into its surroundings!

You can spot this species in the Guang-guang Mangrove Park and Nursery in Mati City.

Meet the Alimokon!

The short-billed brown dove, locally known as the alimokon in many parts of Mindanao, is an endemic dove species found only in Mindanao Island and some parts of the Visayas islands in the Philippines. It is commonly spotted in secondary forests, such as those that were logged in the past, with scattered trees.

However, trappingwild alimokon populations is on the rise, threatening the species. Using "pulot" traps that lure birds with a caged individual, some hunt solely for the pet trade. Concerningly, even social media influencers are now teaching followers how to trap alimokon. This harvesting method can over-exploit wild populations.

This rapid increase in capturing alimokon from the wild poses a grave risk to the species' long-term survival. With their forests also declining, wild populations face exponentially more pressure. Urgent action is needed to curb over-hunting and educate the public about sustainable alternatives, like captive breeding.

Let us fight against the trade and hunting of this species by not supporting those who promote the trade of this species and never ever patronize the seller of this bird.

“Invest in our planet”

The Magblantay Network celebrated Earth day 2022 by planting 160 native and endemic trees along the Mati Protected Landscape (MPL) watershed area.

This is our way of investing in our planet for a greener future. As we believe that this is our social responsibility, not only for the present but also for the future, as watershed areas serves as lifeline not only for humans but also for wildlife.

Thank you Davao Oriental Environment & Natural Resources Office (ENRO-DO) for providing the planting materials and CENRO Mati for allowing us to plant in the MPL.
