As the nation observes Environment Month this June, Davao City Youth for Green Environment, Inc. (DCYGE) expresses deep concern over the continuing waste management crisis affecting communities across Davao City following the operational disruptions at the sanitary landfill in Barangay New Carmen. The accumulation of uncollected waste in residential areas, public spaces, and road networks underscores persistent challenges in the city's waste management system that require immediate and coordinated action.
This situation extends beyond environmental concerns. Uncollected waste increases the risk of disease transmission, degrades community sanitation, and threatens public health and safety. With the onset of the rainy season, accumulated waste may obstruct drainage systems, contributing to localized flooding and the contamination of waterways. These impacts are especially significant for young people, who will bear the long-term consequences of decisions made on environmental governance today.
DCYGE calls on the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and the City Government Of Davao to strengthen youth participation in solid waste management initiatives by promoting waste segregation at source, supporting community-based environmental programs, and mobilizing young people as active partners in maintaining clean and resilient communities. Environmental stewardship must become a sustained community practice rather than a periodic campaign.
We likewise call on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to expedite the inspection, investigation, and completion of all necessary regulatory and technical procedures concerning the sanitary landfill in Barangay New Carmen, and, subject to compliance with environmental and safety standards, facilitate the lifting of the suspension order to help restore the city's waste disposal capacity. At the same time, all actions must prioritize public health and safety, environmental protection, and the effective implementation of sustainable solid waste management measures throughout the city.
Davao City deserves a waste management system that prevents problems before they escalate, responds efficiently when challenges arise, and remains accountable to the communities it serves. A truly DCPlinado Davao is demonstrated not only through public image or slogans, but through clean neighborhoods, responsible environmental governance, functional waste management systems, and the collective commitment of citizens and institutions to a sustainable future.
