𝘿𝘼𝙂𝙃𝘼𝙉𝙂 𝙎𝘼𝙇𝘼𝙈𝘼𝙏, 𝙎𝙋𝙊𝙉𝙎𝙊𝙍𝙎!

Ako—Babae, Batan-on was a project that took one year in the making.

As ambitious as its proponents were in delivering the best interventions to the girls in the streets, they also knew that besides their RDE Seed Funding, the project also needed more support for it to be translated into something impactful and tangible.

With this, the SPC Association of Psychology and Human Services Students thanks the following sponsors who heartily shared their resources to our young beneficiaries:

F2 Logistics
Chikoy’s Lugawan
Micromedia Productions
AOF Foundation
Vice Mayor J. Melchor B. Quitain, Jr.
Body-Mind-Spirit Sync with GL
Councilor Javi Garcia Campos

Your sincere generosity has helped make the girls not only happy, but also a step closer to their dreams and a better sense of awareness towards themselves and others.

Daghang salamat gayud.

Ako—Babae, Batan-on has been capped off with the session held last June 10, 2023, “Fostering Parent-Child Relationship Through Effective Parenting Styles” together with Ms. Maria Susan M. Obena, RGC, MAGC as the resource speaker.

On the said day, parents and family members of the beneficiaries were given seminars and had fruitful discussions on parenting.

“Nalipay sad ko na niapil akong apo diri [sa ABB],” said one of the grandmothers of the beneficiaries who participated in the event.

Furthermore, during the processing, one of the girls shared, “Nalipay ko kay nakabonding mi sa akong pamilya.”

Towards the end of it, an awarding ceremony was held for the girls higlighting the admirable traits that they demonstrated during the four-day event.

Truly, the lessons learned and the rapport formed with them will always leave a mark in the lives of the people behind this event.

May our girls never forget the influence that they are able to make in the community around them.

Indeed every heart was drawn to art as the 3rd session held on June 9, 2023 concluded with insightful learnings towards “Promoting Social Responsibility Through Team Building and Interactive Activities: Sining at Likha”

The girls breathed out their creativity and uniqueness with Art Therapy under the supervision of Mr. Novie John Palarisan, LPT, RPm, RPsy, RGC. Learning and creativity never stops as the outputs were translated into hopes and dreams by the artists themselves.

This session truly served as a reminder of the potentialities these girls have. Their artistic expressions are a tangible representation of their hopes and dreams.

Last June 8, 2023, ABB held its second session, “Promoting Social Responsibility through Teambuilding and Interactive Activities” at Mamay Inn & Resort, Davao City.

The event was kickstarted with a lecturette by their speaker, Gecelle Grace G. Diez, RPsy. One of the girls shared a takeaway that she got from the talk, “Dapat ko magrespeto sa uban tao aron irespeto sad ko”.

Later on, the student facilitators conducted Structured Learning Experiences (SLEs) such as Message Relay and Doctor Help that the beneficiaries derived important life lessons from.

𝙈𝘼, 𝙋𝘼, 𝘽𝙊𝙉𝘿𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙏𝘼 👨‍👩‍👧

Often marginalized and stereotyped as devoid of the ability to sustain genuine human connections, our Davao City Adolescent Girls in the Streets (AGS) beneficiaries have families too.
Albarracin et al. (2019) found that one of the reasons that the AGS leave their homes, thus making them vulnerable in the streets, is due to unhealthy home environment.

With our last day of Ako—Babae, Batan-on this May 10, 2023, their families will be invited to session three entitled, “Fostering Better Parent-Child Relationship Through Effective Parenting Styles” with our speaker, Ms. Maria Susan M. Obena, RGC, MAGC. Moreover, supplies will be provided to their families to help with their sustenance.

It is with hope that the awareness their parents could gain from this event could contribute to building healthier family dynamics for the girls.

While ABB acknowledges that interventions such as raising awareness are merely a responsive measure that barely touch the even bigger issues, it aims to build multigenerational hope within these girls that their future does not have to look the same as their past.

ABB is one with the beneficiaries in fighting for a healthy environment where they could thrive in and in standing against systems of oppression that affect young girls in the streets.

"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."—Viktor Frankl

On Day 1 and Day 2, Ako-Babae-Batan-on conducted their face-to-face implementation. They had an immersive and enlightening seminar designed to unlock the power of connection and elevate these adolescents' interpersonal skills to new heights.

This transformative seminar brings together psychology, communication, and leadership experts to guide them through self-discovery and personal growth. Through engaging them in workshops, interactive activities, and insightful discussions, they got to gain invaluable insights and practical tools to enhance their interpersonal skills in various settings.

Furthermore, social responsibility is one of the core values of SPCians. Hence, the project was a bridge of knowledge as to how these adolescents can use their newfound and innate capabilities in their greater role in society.

Ako-Babae-Batanon indeed served its purpose in successfully conducting this initiative on its 1st and 2nd days.
Stay tuned for more!

Art can, in so many ways, be healing.

Hence, this June 9, 2023, our beneficiaries will be enjoying the third session, “Promoting Social Responsibility Through Teambuilding and Interactive Activities: Sining at Likha” with our speaker, Mr. Novie John Palarisan, LPT, RPm, RPsy, RGC.

The girls will be given activities such as art therapy that will serve as an outlet for them to let their inner states be known.

Though easily forgotten, the adolescent girls in the streets have voices too—that deserve to be amplified, heard, and expressed.

"The internet and online communication is the window into your world - but real life, in-person communication/connection, is the door." ― Rasheed Ogunlaru.

Let us be the change we want to see in this world by venturing out and taking risks! 🌎

With good interpersonal skills, we can be open and honest, create meaningful connections, and grow as individuals. Interpersonal skills are more than just a buzzword; they go beyond being able to communicate with others. It's about how you talk, smile, and look at someone that makes all the difference. Communication is key, but it's the little things that count.

Let us meet our first speaker, Prof. Gecelle Grace G. Diez, RPsy. As she unravel and empower our young adolescent girls become the best version of themselves and others during the first session of Ako—Babae, Batan-on: Fostering Interpersonal Skills of Davao City Adolescent Girls in the Streets, entitled “Developing Good Interpersonal Skills” this June 7, 2023 from 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM at Mamay Inn and Resort, Mamay Rd. Buhangin, Davao City.

Who says women can’t catalyze change?

Meet our ABB project proponents who, along with the support of the SPC Association of Psychology and Human Services Students and the SPC School of Counseling and Psychology, are translating what was once a pitch project entry into impactful reality.

Having known some of the scars and the struggles that women experience in a society entrenched with misogyny and other forms of inequality, the heart of the Ako—Babae Batan-on (ABB) Project lies in the vision that these women have: for women to be women for others—especially the vulnerable like the Davao City Adolescent Girls in the Streets (AGS).

The Davao City Adolescent Girls in the Streets (AGS) were found in the study by Albarracin et al. (2019) to have low interpersonal skills. Because of this, they are vulnerable to being violated and exploited.

Thus, in partnership with the SPC School of Counseling and Psychology and Tambayan Center for Children’s Rights, the SPC AssoPsycHSS will be conducting “Ako—Babae Batan-on: Fostering Interpersonall Skills of Davao City Adolescent Girls in the Streets” at Mamay Inn, Davao City from June 7-10, 2023.

Over the next four days, the girls will be undergoing the following science-backed seminars and interventions:

Day 1: Developing Good Interpersonal Skills
Day 2: Promoting Social Responsibility through Team Building and Interactive Activities
Day 3: Promoting Social Responsibility through Team Building and Interactive Activities
Sining at Likha
Day 4: Fostering Better Parent-Child Relationship Through Effective Parenting Styles

Together, let’s take part in helping build a better world for girls! 🤍
