After 18 months away from public view, Filipinos saw former President Rody Duterte appear in person before the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Duterte attended the third status conference in the crimes against humanity case against him, where judges and lawyers discussed the prosecution’s witnesses and evidence, the disclosure of materials to the defense and preparations for a trial scheduled to begin on Nov. 30.

His defense has also raised concerns about his health and ability to participate in the proceedings, an issue the court is still considering.

Later that day, Duterte’s page shared a photograph of him alongside William Ernest Henley’s poem “Invictus,” highlighting the poem’s themes of resilience and an unconquerable spirit in the face of adversity.

Beyond the drug war case for which he is now detained at the ICC, Duterte’s administration pursued the Build, Build, Build infrastructure program, expanded access to free tertiary education through Republic Act No. 10931, enacted Universal Health Care reforms and signed the Bangsamoro Organic Law, which established a new autonomous political framework in Muslim Mindanao.

On Wednesday, the ICC unanimously ruled that Duterte should remain detained as he faces crimes against humanity charges over alleged killings during his time as president and mayor of Davao City.

Duterte was arrested in March 2025 at Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and was subsequently transferred to the ICC detention center in The Hague.
