WOMEN ARE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH!

Marching into Women's Month, SINAG pay tribute to remarkable women who shaped our history. Gabriela Silang, a fearless leader in our fight for independence; Josefa Llanes Escoda, trailblazer for women's rights; and Tandang Sora, symbolizing patriotism. Their stories weave a rich tapestry of resilience, leadership, and talent, inspiring us to celebrate progress this Women's Month.

This month is not merely a commemoration but a call to action, urging us to reflect on the anthems of resistance and empowerment embedded in our history. From achieving voting rights and addressing macho-feudal culture, women's militant and collective action is a force to be reckoned with. March's celebration also intends to highlight and address issues such as gender equity, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Although remarkable progress was achieved, there is a lot more that needs to be done. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, we aspire to contribute to cultivate a society that recognizes and values the indispensable role of women in holding up half the sky.

SINAG will be participating grassroots-driven activities and campaigns this Women's Month. As a youth organization, we further commit to be one with the Filipino youth, Filipino women and the Filipino people in campaigning for a society with justice and peace.

Today, we commemorate the 38th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution. This historical event marked by the presence of nuns, priests, students, ordinary citizens, and defecting military personnelโ€”Filipino people from all walks of life, showcased the power of united resistance against the repressive regime of Marcos Srโ€™s dictatorship. Today, we also remember the victims who suffered under martial law and those who sacrificed their lives to fight for our democracy.

As we commemorate the EDSA People Power Revolution, let us remember that what happened then should serve as a valuable lesson for the people today, especially the youth. We should remember what happened, especially now that history seems to repeat itself as another Marcos sits as president. Let us revive the spirit of the EDSA Revolution in these times as we confront disinformation and historical revisionism. Let us continue to be vigilant, especially against the blatant attempts to change our Constitution.

The future is in the hands of the youth and it is crucial for us to understand the essence of the People Power Revolution as it reminds us of the power of collective action. We should not forget the sacrifices and struggles of those who fought for democracy and break away from the chains of dictatorship. We must continue to struggle and persist in our fight to uphold and immortalize the power of democracy, particularly in this time of another Marcos administration looming over us, when our democracy and freedom are being threatened again.

Freedom, Equality, and Justice for All!

Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 75th anniversary is celebrated today, December 10, 2023. UDHR is one of the world's most significant commitments to humanity. This consequential document avows inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human beingโ€”regardless of race, color, religion, s*x, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. Social Initiatives for Nurturing Communities and Active Governance (SINAG) reaffirms its commitment to promoting and protecting the fundamental rights and dignity of every individual and envisions a world where equality, justice, and respect prevail for all.

As a youth organization, SINAG is aware that there is a lot that needs to be done given the Philippine government's appalling record in human rights. In the face of rampant extrajudicial killings, state-sanctioned brutality, stifling of dissent, and inadequate social services, we yearn for a real changeโ€”a departure from the current state that perpetuates gross inequalities and systematically marginalizes and exploits the masses.

As we celebrate International Human Rights Day, we demand not only recognition but the actualization of the rights of every Filipino. While this day's remembrance serves as a promising reminder of a better future, we are with those who struggle against a system that prioritizes profit over people. SINAG believes that the promises of UDHR can only be fulfilled by seeking not just to address symptoms but to eradicate the root causes that perpetuate suffering; by confronting the oppressive machinery directly, challenging the very foundations that breed impunity; by pushing boundaries, from the streets to the corridors of power, leaving no room for the violators of human rights to operate unchecked.

The struggle for human rights in the Philippines demands people who refuse to be silenced by any red-tagging or any other forms of intimidation as we aspire to become one of those who persistently fight for a future where justice, equality, and freedom are the birthright of every Filipino.

In the trenches of the human rights struggle in the Philippines, collaboration with like-minded advocates to forge alliances that go beyond traditional boundaries. Together, we strategically mobilize, leveraging the strength of collective resistance against forces that undermine the dignity and freedoms of the Filipino people.

SINAG President Rose Quimod together with newly-elected SK Chairperson Kurt Placencia of Brgy. 38-B gathered the youth of their community to give a talk and have a discussion on youth leadership, elements of good governance, and their role on nation-building.

Quimod and Placencia attended a 3-day workshop on youth CSO training for political and governance participation last May 19-21, 2023 held at Quezon City. Applying their learnings during the Sangguniang Kabataan campaign session, SINAG commits to impart this knowledge to the youth of Davao.
