FUTURE RNDS GEARED UP FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE IN PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION PRE-DEPLOYMENT TRAINING

Preparing to take their clinical and theoretical knowledge straight to the grassroots, the 4th-year BS Nutrition and Dietetics interns of the University of Mindanao, alongside 3rd-year Public Health Nutrition students, completed an intensive two-day Pre-Deployment Training for their upcoming Public Health Nutrition Practicum.

Accompanied by their Internship Coordinator, Mr. Kent Charles F. Roque, RND, MBA-HP, the students gathered for a series of lectures and output evaluations designed to equip them with the necessary tools for field deployment. The training was facilitated by expert Nutrition Officers from the City Health Office - Nutrition Division, namely Ms. Ginger S. Ferrer, RND, Ms. Eloisa Simbajon, RND, and Ms. Kim Charres Baguasan, RND.

The first day focused on establishing a firm understanding of national and local public health frameworks. The trainers led comprehensive discussions on the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, the Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition, and the formulation of the Barangay Nutrition Action Plan. The students also tackled the practical ex*****on of the Nutrition Care Process specifically adapted for community settings, ensuring they are well-prepared to assess and intervene in local nutrition issues.

The second day challenged the 4th-year interns to apply their knowledge through a project pitching session, where they presented their proposed community intervention projects. A panel of experts evaluated the feasibility and impact of the proposals, offering critical feedback to refine the projects before actual implementation. The panel comprised Internship Coordinator Mr. Kent Charles Roque, Ms. Ginger Ferrer in her capacity as Nutritionist-Dietitian of Talomo Central, and Sir Sherwin Solano, Program Head of the UM BS Nutrition and Dietetics department.

With their proposals vetted and their knowledge refreshed on key public health protocols, the future Registered Nutritionist-Dietitians are now officially ready to deploy and serve their partner communities.
