In verse 40, Martha demonstrates
hospitality by welcoming Jesus’ and serving the guest. It’s not a problem that she serves and become hospitable to her guest but the thing is,she’s distracted by the many tasks.
Troubled and worried about so many things, where Jesus’ said in verse 41.
Martha’s distraction and worry leave no room for the most important thing about hospitality —— gracious attention to the guest.
We can learn here that often times we are “Martha” who is troubled and so worried over so many things that we tend to forget what one thing we need. Worried on how we can survive school, worried on how we can provide for our families, worried in everything.
We are also the “Marthas” who wants to serve the Lord and performs the tasks of hospitality and service in a church set up.
And yet if all of this leave us no time to be still in the Lord’s presence and hear God’s Word,we are likely to end up become anxious and troubled. —— Trying to serve without being nourished by God’s word is like expecting good fruit to grow from a tree that has been uprooted.
We do know that Jesus invites all of us who are worried and distracted by many things to sit and rest in his presence, to hear his words of grace and truth, to know that we are loved and valued as children of God, to be renewed in faith and strengthened for service.🤍
