Citizens must insist that security means protection from hunger and violence, not surveillance or repression. And freedom must mean more than words on paper โ€” it must be lived in everyday life, without fear of those in power.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines โ€“ The World Values Survey results show most Filipinos choose โ€œsecurityโ€ over โ€œfreedom.โ€ But in a country where poverty and government abuse define daily life, true security cannot exist without freedom โ€” and freedom cannot survive without security.ย  The survey le...

Dr. Jean A. Lindo writes: The death of a student is a quiet horror every educator dreads. In the medical school where I teach, our institutional reflex to tragedy is swift, quiet, and unconditioned by blame: when a foreign student under our care tragically drowned, the priority was immediate, seamless assistance to the family. Responsibility could be parsed later; comfort and dignity had to be delivered at once.

It was through this lens of professional experience โ€” and profound grief โ€” that I watched the fallout from the drowning of Rene Clert Baterbonia and his teammate Divine Adili.

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews /12 June 2026) โ€“ โ€‹The death of a student is a quiet horror every educator dreads. In the medical school where I teach, our institutional

Davao women rise for freedom and sovereignty!

On Independence Day 2026, members of GABRIELA-Southern Mindanao and Gabriela Youth-Davao are one with the broader masses in standing up for self-determination, sovereignty, and liberation from the claws of imperialist powers such as the United States - which continues to intervene in Philippine affairs through the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, the Visiting Forces Agreement, and the Marcos regime's servility to the dictates of the US government and big business.

GABRIELA asserts that it is only through militant and collective struggle that Filipino women and people can truly achieve genuine independence.

The official opening of the school year yesterday was met with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, further exposing the same old problems that has been plaguing the Philippine education system for decades.

A situation report issued by DepEd states that the earthquake resulted in the disruption of classes for over *4 million students* and *156,282 school personnel.*

โ€œAno ba ang sinasabi ng data na ito tungkol sa education system sa bansa?โ€ Trixie Manalo, youth spokesperson of the alliance asks.

Meanwhile, students in Pampanga struggled with flood on their first day of classes. While these issues in the education sector has literally left millions of our students shaken, the administration seems more concerned with politicking and their power games.

The rights alliance assert that systemic problems require systemic change.

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) Southern Mindanao and Karapatan-Southern Mindanao, in partnership with GABRIELA-Southern Mindanao and Sabokahan, cordially invite you to a multisectoral educational forum entitled, "Occupation and Resistance: A forum on US Wars of Aggression" on June 6, 2026, 1:00 PM, in Davao City.

The forum aims to promote awareness and critical discourse on the impacts of war, foreign militarization, and related policies on national sovereignty, the environment, livelihoods, and human rights in the Philippines and across the globe. The forum also seeks to strengthen solidarity and collective action among different sectors in the pursuit of peace, justice and people's rights.

We are honored to have Ms. Amirah Lidasan from the Moro-Christian People's Alliance as the forum's resource person. A panel of reactors from Davao civil society and religious sectors were also invited to give insights.
