𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰, 𝘜𝘗, 𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘨𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘦!

New faces, new environment, new journey. The next few years of your university life have just begun, and the UP Mindanao community gave its warmest welcome to our newest Iskolars ng Bayan during a university convocation program on August 17, 2026.

Pahinungod volunteers facilitated the pre-event program with interactive games and sharing sessions led by upperclass students, and they also received raffle prizes such as a computer mouse, sketchpads, notebooks, Post-its, ballpens, and hygiene kits.

The convocation program marked the official start of the first day of classes for the 2026-2027 academic year. It featured performances, inspiring messages from university officials and guests, and a clear reminder to every student of why studying at UP is a responsibility; everyone is called to serve the people and the community.

On August 12, 2026, the Ugnayan ng Pahinungód Mindanao, the university’s volunteer service arm, presented the office’s public service engagements and initiatives to first-year students during the First Year Orientation conducted by the Office of Student Affairs.

The presentation was led by Ugnayan ng Pahinungód Mindanao Director Michael A. Gatela, who shared the office’s history, accomplishments, volunteer population, programs, and services, including the flagship Affirmative Action Program (AAP), in which some of the students participated in the Pahinungóds Academic Enhancement Camp.

The students also participated in a question-and-answer portion and received tokens of gratitude for their active participation.

Serving others does not need to be grand; it only takes a willing heart and an ounce of your time. As Iskolars ng Bayan, we must embody UP’s core values: Honor and Excellence in the Service of the Filipino people. In the words of former UP President Alfredo Pascual, “We in UP must succeed not because we have a reputation to keep but because we have a country to serve.”

𝐔𝐏𝐂𝐀𝐓 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟕 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞

Thank you to all the examinees for your generosity and for passing the luck forward to our future Iskolars ng Bayan. Because of your donations, many children from Laak, Davao de Oro, and Agusan del Sur will have smiles on their faces and be able to write about their dreams.

The Ugnayan ng Pahinungod Mindanao collected a total of 1,477 pencils across four drop box stations. At the UP Mindanao testing center, 1,363 pencils were donated. Meanwhile, the Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School testing center collected 78 pencils, and the Heracleco Casco Memorial National High School testing center collected 36.

Thank you also to our volunteers who facilitated the Pencil Donation Drive, the examiners, proctors, and other personnel, and our student volunteers, Alexi Fae Cebulleros and Lady Jean Yecyec Geverola, for facilitating the donation drive in their respective home provinces.

Our featured volunteer for today is Isiah Alicaba, fondly known as Sey, a Cum Laude graduate of UP Mindanao's BS Biology program. Before joining Pahinungód, Sey believed he had to prove himself to be worthy of serving others. He thought he needed more achievements and influence to make a real difference.

When Sey began volunteering at Pahinungód, he realized he could make a difference by helping someone feel seen, heard, and valued. “Pahinungód taught me that serving our country doesn't begin when we become extraordinary; it begins the moment we choose to care and offer what we can, where we are.”

Our featured volunteer for today is Catherine R. Discorson, a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the BS Anthropology Program of UP Mindanao. Cath, a student leader and a Pahinungód volunteer, always knew that her heart belonged to the masses, to the underserved and marginalized communities.

Currently, Cath is serving as a Gurong Pahinungód in Tawi-Tawi; her experiences as a volunteer teacher have made her realize the greater importance of having more compassionate and understanding individuals who have the heart to serve the people and the community.

𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝!

Donate your lucky pencils to the schoolchildren of Laak, Davao de Oro and Agusan del Sur.

To all the UPCAT 2027 takers this August 1-2, 2026, leave the superstition behind and instead be the reason someone at school in far-flung areas can be able to write for their dreams.

Do not break your pencils, only the superstitions. Donate them instead and give them a new purpose. Drop your pencils at our Pencil Donation Drive stations located at the Atrium, Admin Building, UP Mindanao, College of Science and Mathematics, Heracleo Casco Memorial National High School, Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental, and Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School, Davao de Oro.

Together, let us help write the stories of future Iskolars ng Bayan.

Our featured volunteer for today is Mumiah Shane R. Guimbarda, a BS Biology graduate from UP Mindanao and a dedicated public servant inside and outside the university. Mumiah is no stranger to public service initiatives. In fact, back in her hometown of Dipolog, she is active in civic and youth organizations and has led multiple community service engagements.

During her time as a student volunteer at Pahinungód, Mumiah served as a regular volunteer host at events and ceremonies, where she learned that her role as host was never just about speaking in front of people or keeping the program running; “it was about connecting with communities, listening to their stories, and helping create a space where everyone felt valued and included”.

Our featured volunteer for today is Jela Gracee D. Dumaguin, a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the BA English (Creative Writing) program at UP Mindanao. Since her freshman year, Jela has been an active volunteer with Ugnayan ng Pahinungód Mindanao. Four years later, she answered the call to serve in far-flung communities through the Gurong Pahinungód program.

Before answering the call of the Oblation, Jela had planned to pursue a different career path—perhaps law school. However, life took a turn, leading her to discover her true purpose. As she reflected, "Purpose often finds us on the most ordinary days."

Currently, Jela is serving as a Gurong Pahinungód volunteer in Tawi-Tawi. In this southernmost island province, she encounters real stories of hope and perseverance in the faces of children who dream of a better future for themselves and their families.
