I posted this as a public awareness reminder.
May 30,2026 Around 7:00 PM, I was eating balut. I removed all the shell, placed it in a bowl, and ate it by taking large bites. While trying to sip a small amount of the broth, I accidentally swallowed the entire balut. The hard white part became lodged in my esophagus and caused a blockage, which led to me undergoing major surgery at 4:00 AM May 31,2026.
Lesson learned: Whether it's balut, durian, or any food with seeds, bones, shells, or hard portions, always separate and remove them before taking a bite. This can help prevent choking incidents that may lead to serious accidents, especially among children.
A special thanks and heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Salud and the entire medical team for the successful procedure, which lasted almost two hours. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Davao Doctrs Hospital for their professionalism, dedication, and excellent care throughout this ordeal. Your quick response and commitment made a tremendous difference, and I am truly grateful.
Please be extra careful when eating. A simple mistake can quickly become a medical emergency.
Stay safe, everyone
